1.1 Introduction
Quality planning is regarded as most businesses as a strategy that supports and maintains organisational performance. Performance may be a powerful force for organisational transformation and the enhancement of general quality when quality planning is in place (Marcoux & St-Onge 2004). The accomplishment of organisational change initiatives, and quality planning in particular, depends critically on an organization's workforce productivity performance (Chang 2006).
A quality planning strategy may offer a structure that enables businesses to meet the demands of their partners, cater to client expectations, and put general process management ahead of system compliance. The usual result is an improvement in performance. An organization may use any of these structures and models to attain more prominent authority framework adequacy, which will increase profitability and partner fulfilment (Okwiri, 2014).
This chapter will address the background information that motivated this study, the challenges that prompted it, its aim, and its objectives as a preface to subsequent sections of the study. Additional factors include the study's significance, scope, limitations, research questions and hypotheses, and the definition of technical terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Quality planning has become increasingly crucial as time goes on, being seen as one of the most significant elements of any given product and the lifeblood of enterprises (Pambeni et al. 2019). Pathaneeswaran et al. (2006) asserted that, an organization's ability to secure a competitive advantage over competing enterprises is considered crucial. Since all core business operations, such as the role of administration, fundamental leadership, and essential plans, should have been in accordance with quality and continuously enhanced as association conditions and direction change, the management of many businesses has forced the shift into effect. Value has evolved into the concept of execution planning, which modifies exercises carried out by all organizations and builds upon general sufficiency and hierarchical supportability (Evans & Lindsay 2008).
The technique has been outlined, and there are discernible commonalities throughout the several universal examinations on quality planning conducted by various academics. Important processes have been accepted under each of these criteria for circumstances when associations are dependent on their clients; as such, they should understand their clients' requirements both now and in the future and work to exceed their expectations (Biazzo & Bernardi, 2008).
The assessment of organisational performance has evolved throughout time. Organisational performance is still a problem and is still evolving in certain management studies due to the wide range of definitions and understandings of the concept (Barney, 2001). Organisational performance cannot be separated from the factors influencing it, as it is contingent upon the execution of the performance process. These factors include leadership, technology, quality assurance, input quality, and management environment quality among other things, commitment, training, and promotions (Noruzy et al., 2013; Braun et al., 2013; Abdous, 2009; Puig et al., 2007).
Katller and Armstrong (2004) have suggested that quality planning is and has become a method that is recognized to guarantee execution and survival in the accelerated modern economies. In every company, achieving success is mostly dependent on quality. Improving the quality of their products and services, their abilities, and the way associations are managed has proven to be difficult for organizations to put together. Magnificence in products and endeavours is implied by quality, especially to the extent that they meet requirements and satisfy customers (Islam, A. & Haque, A. F. M. 2012).
The manufacturing business section comprises the largest portion of the management business, catering to the needs of different categories of people. Quality planning is now the new method to support hierarchical execution and upper hands; it is the foundation of the organization's success (Ooi et al., 2011). According to Getecha (2013), the technique of assembling organisations contributes to excellent administration methods, but its utilization is incredibly low.
According to Getecha (2013), the aggregate quality administration approach that was tested did not significantly affect the hierarchical execution process. in the long run, a well-designed planning system could have a significant role, but ineffective execution and a low response rate in the region of assembly make the influence insignificant. The goal of this inquiry is to better understand how Nigeria's industrial sectors, especially Dangote Group Plc, use quality management systems.
According to Cantrell (2011), top management in organisations can apply an administration approach based on some or all of the eight quality management standards that are cherished in ISO's total quality management. These standards provide guidelines and directives that govern activities within associations, allowing for consistent improvement in performance while attending to the needs of clients and other partners. Top management responsibility, continuous innovation and development of products and services, representative strengthening, process approach, genuine basic leadership approach, frameworks for handling administration, and client centering are these fundamental standards (Su et al., 2008).
In accordance with Okwiri (2012), the actions that take place inside an organization's setting determine the fundamental norms, which are referred to as the system. Incorporating the utilization of expenses, data-based techniques, framework-based methodology, client-based procedures, and provider-based systems are necessary to meet the demands of partners. With an eye towards significant standards and systems, organisations frequently adopt structures and models with the aim of focusing on process arrangement and planning throughout the whole association. Examples of organisational structures include self-appraisal models, ISO principles affirmations, venture asset arranging, quality administration frameworks, and business greatness models (Kakooza et al., 2015). Therefore, in Dangote Group PLC where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Role of Quality Plan in Enhancing Organizational Performance.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that manufacturing organizations typically exhibit extensive financial mismanagement as a result of inadequate internal management. To become more effective and lucrative, several public companies have thus either been sold, privatized, or used quality planning and management techniques (Ochieng & Ahmed, 2014). In order to enhance organisational performance and delight consumers, several organizations have also adopted quality management strategies (Talib et al., 2013).
According to Wickramasinghe (2012), a lot of study has focused on the advantages that quality management strategies offer to businesses and how implementing a comprehensive quality management strategy affects performance.
As stated by Basir, Davies, and Rudder (2011), the findings of several research projects have produced conflicting conclusions on the performance and advantages of organisations. This is consistent with what Costa and Lorente (2007) found. The role that effective planning techniques have in raising customer satisfaction in a business has been highlighted by a number of global, regional, and local studies (Crosby, 2000; Oakland, 2003; Denning, 2006; and Feigenbaum, 2006). However, the focus of this research has not been on manufacturing enterprises; rather, it has been on how profit-making organizations operate in relation to quality planning techniques. Prior research has mostly examined financial organizations; however, the industrial industry has received less attention.
It is evident from the discussion that came before it that there is insufficient data from earlier research on the connection between effective planning and organisational success. Important aspects of planning, methods for improving quality planning, and the impact of quality planning on the organisational performance of Nigerian manufacturing companies have also not received enough attention in the literature. Thus, by examining the connection between organisational performance and quality planning using a case study of Dangote Group Plc, this study aimed to close the gaps that were identified.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to investigate the Role of Quality Plan in Enhancing Organizational Performance using Dangote Group PLC as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To examine the procedures for enhancing quality planning in Dangote Group Plc;
- To determine the influence of quality planning on organisational performance; and
- To find out the important parts of quality planning that promote organizational performance.
1.5 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- What are the procedures for enhancing quality planning in Dangote Group Plc?
- What is the influence of quality planning on organisational performance?
- What are the important parts of quality planning that promote organizational performance?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H01: There is no significant correlation between procedures for enhancing quality planning and organizational performance
- H02: There is a significant relationship between important parts of quality planning and organizational performance
- H03: There is a significant influence of quality planning and organisational performance
1.7 Significance of Study
It is crucial for businesses to prioritize quality control with the goal to gain competitive advantages and make their product competitive with imported goods in Nigeria, where there is intense competition.
The importance of quality planning in production systems cannot be overstated. Less positive, nevertheless, are Nigerian manufacturers' views about quality planning. This is demonstrated by subpar goods. They do not make it available to customers, in which case the manufacturer views the store as having inverted relevance given that the study's overarching goals are to get recommendations that will enable them to successfully manage the difficulties associated with quality planning measures in their production operations.
In addition to the existing relevance, this study will be extremely helpful to other researchers who want to learn more about it, and non-researchers can utilise it to further their own research endeavours. This research advances our understanding and may function as a model for future investigations.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on the Role of Quality Plan in Enhancing Organizational Performance using Dangote Group PLC as a case study.
The quality planning is pertinent to Nigeria's industrial sector. Since Dangote Group Plc is the case study for this research project, the study is limited to the employees and management of the company, even though quality planning is a significant activity for all business organizations and workers in the manufacturing industry.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Research Material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
