1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Electronic workflow tracking has emerged as a crucial tool in modern organizations for managing complex operations and ensuring operational accuracy. According to Laudon & Laudon (2020), organizations adopting electronic workflow tracking experience significant improvements in process visibility, decision-making speed, and error reduction (Laudon & Laudon, 2020). Furthermore, Oz (2009) stated that operational accuracy depends not only on the presence of digital tracking systems but also on the reliability of data inputs, user compliance, and system consistency. In many instances, discrepancies in data entry, system downtime, or lack of user training result in errors that compromise the expected benefits of workflow tracking.
Electronic workflow tracking is the systematic use of digital technologies to monitor, coordinate, and control the flow of tasks, information, and approvals across organizational processes in order to achieve efficiency, accountability, and accuracy in operations. It integrates people, procedures, and information systems into a structured digital environment where activities are recorded, tracked, and evaluated in real time (Davenport & Short, 1990). In modern organizations, electronic workflow tracking has become a critical component of enterprise information systems, as it supports timely decision making, process transparency, and the reduction of operational errors that are commonly associated with manual workflows.
Operational accuracy refers to the degree to which organizational processes are executed correctly, consistently, and in accordance with established standards and objectives. It involves precision in data handling, adherence to procedures, and the reliable completion of tasks within defined timelines. High operational accuracy is essential for organizations operating in complex and regulated environments, as errors in processes or information often lead to increased costs, compliance issues, and reduced organizational performance (Laudon & Laudon, 2020).
In the context of Chevron Nigeria, operational activities span multiple functions including procurement, production, compliance reporting, and safety management. It is affirmed that accurate tracking of these workflows is critical, as errors can lead to substantial financial losses, safety risks, and regulatory noncompliance (Laudon & Laudon, 2020). On the other hand, the adoption of electronic workflow systems in such large-scale operations presents challenges related to system complexity, and employee adaptation, which may hinder the full realization of operational accuracy. This study is set against the backdrop of the need to examine how electronic workflow tracking systems influence operational accuracy within Chevron Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that system integration issues result in inconsistencies between different departments, causing delays in task completion and discrepancies in data records. It was observed that the workflow system sometimes fails to capture all process stages, leading to incomplete documentation and inaccurate reporting.
Additionally, user compliance issues and insufficient training were also identified, as some employees do not fully utilize the system or resort to manual workarounds, reducing the reliability of workflow outputs.
Furthermore, system downtimes and software glitches disrupt real-time tracking and affect decision-making. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the analysis of electronic workflow tracking and operational accuracy at Chevron Nigeria.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to analyze electronic workflow tracking and its effect on operational accuracy at Chevron Nigeria. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- Evaluate the efficiency of the current electronic workflow tracking system in Chevron Nigeria.
- Identify challenges and limitations of the existing workflow system affecting operational accuracy.
- Examine the role of user compliance and training in the effectiveness of workflow tracking.
- Assess the impact of system reliability and integration on process performance.
- Recommend strategies to improve electronic workflow tracking and enhance operational accuracy.
1.4 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How efficient is the current electronic workflow tracking system in Chevron Nigeria?
- What challenges or limitations in the existing workflow system affect operational accuracy?
- How does user compliance and training influence the effectiveness of the workflow tracking system?
- To what extent do system reliability and integration affect operational performance?
- What strategies can be implemented to improve workflow tracking and enhance operational accuracy?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H01: There is no significant relationship between electronic workflow tracking and operational accuracy in Chevron Nigeria.
- H02: Electronic workflow tracking significantly improves operational accuracy in Chevron Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the research will help Chevron Nigeria understand system inefficiencies, improve training programs, and optimize workflow processes. The study will also contribute to academic research by providing empirical data on the effectiveness of digital workflow systems in large organizations.
Furthermore, the study will enable informed decisions regarding workflow system upgrades and resource allocation for improved operational performance. In addition, the study will provide evidence on how workflow tracking supports operational transparency, compliance, and accountability.
Lastly, the findings will serve as a reference for other companies in the oil and gas sector seeking to adopt or improve workflow tracking systems.
1.7 Scope of Study
This study focuses on the analysis of electronic workflow tracking and its impact on operational accuracy within Chevron Nigeria Limited, a major oil and gas company operating in Nigeria. The scope covers both system functionality and human factors affecting operational performance within the Nigerian context.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Electronic Workflow Tracking:
