1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
The assessment of radiology staff attitudes towards clinical training students has evolved alongside the development of medical imaging education and professional training. Historically, radiology as a medical discipline emerged in the late 19th century following Wilhelm Roentgen's discovery of X-rays in 1895, which revolutionized diagnostic medicine (Bushong, 2019). As the field of radiology advanced, the need for structured education and practical training became essential, leading to the establishment of formal radiography training programs in various countries, including Nigeria (Eze & Okoye, 2021).
Early radiography education relied heavily on an apprenticeship model, where students learned directly from experienced radiographers and radiologists in clinical settings (Jones et al., 2020). The effectiveness of this training depended on the willingness of radiology staff to mentor and guide students. Over time, as medical imaging technology expanded with the introduction of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and digital radiography, training programs became more structured, integrating clinical practice with academic coursework (Williams & Brown, 2018).
In Nigeria, radiography education has been shaped by regulatory bodies such as the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN), which mandates clinical training as an essential component of radiography degree programs (Oladimeji & Adeniran, 2022). Teaching hospitals and diagnostic centers have played a crucial role in providing hands-on training for students, but the attitudes of radiology staff toward trainees have varied significantly. While some staff members embrace their role as educators, others view student supervision as an additional burden due to increased workload and limited institutional support (Akinpelu et al., 2020).
According to Jones et al. (2019), clinical training is a fundamental aspect of radiology education, equipping students with the practical skills needed for professional competency in medical imaging (Smith & Brown, 2020). The effectiveness of clinical training is largely influenced by the attitudes of radiology staff, who serve as mentors and supervisors in the clinical setting. A supportive and positive attitude from radiology professionals enhances students' learning experiences, fosters confidence, and improves their clinical proficiency (Jones et al., 2019). However, challenges such as workload pressure, inadequate staffing, and institutional constraints may impact how radiology staff engage with students during clinical training (Ali & Ahmed, 2021).
In Nigeria, radiology departments in teaching hospitals and diagnostic centers play a crucial role in training students enrolled in radiography and medical imaging programs. However, variations in staff attitudes have been observed, ranging from enthusiastic mentorship to passive supervision or outright neglect (Odetunde & Okeke, 2022). Some staff members actively engage with students, providing guidance and constructive feedback, while others perceive student training as an additional burden due to increasing patient loads and administrative responsibilities (Adeyemi & Lawal, 2021). Studies have shown that a well-structured clinical training program, supported by committed radiology staff, enhances students' practical knowledge and professional development (Williams et al., 2020). Conversely, a lack of engagement or negative attitudes from staff may lead to a poor learning environment, reduced student motivation, and gaps in essential clinical skills (Bello & Yusuf, 2021). Therefore, this study seeks to assess the attitudes of radiology staff toward clinical training students, identifying key factors that influence their perceptions and interactions.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that clinical training is an essential part of radiography education, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in medical imaging procedures under the supervision of radiology staff (Jones et al., 2020). However, the attitudes of radiology staff towards clinical training students influence the effectiveness of this learning process. A positive and supportive attitude is crucial for fostering a conducive learning environment, while a lack of engagement or negative perceptions may hinder students' ability to develop the necessary skills and confidence (Williams & Brown, 2019).
Furthermore, in many healthcare institutions, radiology staff are faced with increasing workloads, limited resources, and staffing shortages, which may contribute to reduced enthusiasm for mentoring students (Odetunde & Okeke, 2022). Some staff members perceive student supervision as an added responsibility that interferes with their primary duties, leading to inadequate guidance and insufficient feedback during clinical rotations (Akinpelu et al., 2020).
It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to assess the attitude of radiology staffs towards clinical training students.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to assess the attitude of radiology staff towards clinical training students. The specific objectives of this study include:
- To examine the general attitude of radiology staff towards clinical training students in healthcare institutions.
- To identify the key factors that influence the attitudes of radiology staff towards student supervision and mentorship.
- To assess the impact of radiology staff attitudes on the learning experience and skill development of clinical training students.
- To explore the challenges radiology staff face in supervising and mentoring students during clinical training.
- To recommend strategies for improving the relationship between radiology staff and clinical training students to enhance professional development and knowledge transfer.
1.4 Research Questions
To achieve the objectives of this study, the following research questions are addressed:

- What is the general attitude of radiology staff towards clinical training students in healthcare institutions?

- What strategies can be implemented to maintain a conducive clinical training environment where radiology staff actively engage in student mentorship and knowledge transfer?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
Hypothesis One
- H0: The general attitude of radiology staff does not significantly influence the learning experience and skill development of clinical training students
- H1: The general attitude of radiology staff significantly influences the learning experience and skill development of clinical training students
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Challenges such as insufficient resources, staff shortages, and lack of structured mentorship programs negatively affect the supervision of clinical training students
- H1: Challenges such as insufficient resources, staff shortages, and lack of structured mentorship programs positively affect the supervision of clinical training students
1.6 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will contribute to the development of structured mentorship programs that will enhance staff-student relationships, making clinical training more effective and supportive. This study will also benefit radiology departments by highlighting challenges faced by staff in mentoring students and recommending strategies to address them. Improved training conditions will lead to better knowledge transfer, skill acquisition, and overall competence of radiology students entering the profession.
Furthermore, healthcare policymakers will gain a better understanding of the importance of supportive clinical training environments and will be able to implement reforms that will improve staff engagement in student training.
1.7 Scope of Study
This study focuses on assessing the attitude of radiology staff towards clinical training students in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Lagos State, Nigeria. The study examines how radiology staff interact with, mentor, and supervise clinical training students within the hospital's radiology department.
The research covers various factors influencing staff attitudes, including workload, institutional policies, and available mentorship programs. It also explores the impact of these attitudes on the learning experience and skill development of students undergoing clinical training.
The study is limited to radiology staff and clinical training students within LASUTH, making the findings specific to this institution. However, the insights gained will provide useful recommendations that could be applied to other teaching hospitals and radiology departments across Nigeria.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
This study was limited by several factors that affected the depth and scope of data collection. One major limitation was insufficient data, as some radiology staff were unwilling to disclose detailed information about their attitudes and experiences with clinical training students.
Frequent power failure in the study location disrupted data collection processes, particularly for interviews and online surveys, which led to delays in obtaining responses from participants.
Another challenge was delays from respondents, as some radiology staff had tight work schedules that made it difficult for them to complete surveys or participate in interviews within the expected timeframe.
Financial constraints also posed a limitation, as resources for extensive data collection, travel, and printing of research materials were restricted, affecting the number of hospitals and participants that could be included in the study.
Additionally, time constraints affected the comprehensiveness of the research, as the study was conducted within a specific academic timeframe, limiting the ability to explore additional variables that could have provided further insights into the topic.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Attitude: Attitude refers to an individual's perception, feelings, and behavior towards a particular subject or group (Ajzen, 1991). In this study, attitude represents the way radiology staff respond—either positively or negatively—towards clinical training students during their learning experience.
Radiology Staff: Radiology staff includes professionals such as radiographers, radiologists, and radiology technicians who work in a radiology department. These individuals play a crucial role in patient imaging, diagnosis, and guiding clinical training students in practical applications (WHO, 2019).
Clinical Training Students: Clinical training students are individuals undergoing practical, hands-on training in a healthcare facility as part of their radiography education. They apply theoretical knowledge in real-world medical imaging settings under the supervision of experienced radiology staff (Okoye & Eze, 2020).
Clinical Training: Clinical training is a structured learning experience where students gain practical skills in a hospital or clinical setting. It involves direct interaction with patients, use of imaging equipment, and application of theoretical knowledge under professional supervision (Gibbs et al., 2018).
Supervision: Supervision in clinical training refers to theoversight and guidance provided by experienced radiology staff to students.Effective supervision ensures that students learn best practices, improvetechnical skills, and adhere to professional standards (Kilminster & Jolly,2000).
