1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Historically, hypertension and its recognition as a significant health concern dates back centuries, with early mentions found in ancient texts. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that hypertension began to be understood as a distinct clinical entity. In 1880, the German physician Karl Friedrich Wilhelm von Recklinghausen first described the relationship between high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (Katz et al., 2008). This marked the beginning of systematic studies on blood pressure, leading to increased awareness of its implications for health. Throughout the 20th century, advancements in medical technology, such as the invention of the sphygmomanometer by Scipione Riva-Rocci in 1896, facilitated the measurement of blood pressure in a more standardized manner. This innovation allowed physicians to monitor and diagnose hypertension more effectively (O'Brien et al., 2001).
In recent decades, public health initiatives have focused on educating the elderly about the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, healthy lifestyle choices, and adherence to antihypertensive medications. The development of guidelines, such as those by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, has provided a framework for healthcare providers to assess and manage hypertension in older adults effectively (Whelton et al., 2018).
Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a pervasive health issue that significantly impacts the quality of life and longevity of individuals, particularly the elderly population. It is defined as a condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney damage (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). The global prevalence of hypertension among older adults has reached alarming levels, with estimates indicating that nearly two-thirds of individuals aged 60 and above are affected (Kearney et al., 2005). The pathophysiology of hypertension in the elderly is multifactorial, encompassing both physiological changes associated with aging and lifestyle factors. As individuals age, there is a natural stiffening of the arterial walls, which contributes to increased resistance against blood flow (Fleg & Strait, 2012). Furthermore, lifestyle factors such as poor dietary habits, physical inactivity, and obesity significantly exacerbate the risk of developing high blood pressure (García et al., 2019). The elderly are often at higher risk due to the accumulation of comorbidities, including diabetes and chronic kidney disease, which further complicate the management of hypertension (Morrish et al., 2001).
Preventing high blood pressure in the elderly is essential for reducing the burden of hypertension-related complications. Effective prevention strategies include promoting a heart-healthy diet, encouraging regular physical activity, and ensuring access to routine health screenings (Whelton et al., 2018). Public health initiatives aimed at educating the elderly about the importance of lifestyle modifications and regular monitoring can play a critical role in curbing the rising incidence of hypertension in this demographic.

In many developing countries, including Nigeria, the burden of hypertension is escalating, with alarming rates observed among the elderly (Olatunji et al., 2020). Contributing factors to high blood pressure in this demographic may include age-related changes in the cardiovascular system, dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and comorbid conditions such as diabetes and obesity (Kearney et al., 2005). Furthermore, social determinants of health, such as access to healthcare and education, significantly influence the awareness and management of hypertension in older adults (Marmot et al., 2008). Preventive strategies are vital for managing high blood pressure among the elderly, as they can significantly reduce the risk of related health complications. These strategies include lifestyle modifications, such as adopting a balanced diet low in sodium and rich in fruits and vegetables, engaging in regular physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption (Chobanian et al., 2003). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to assess the causes and prevention of high blood pressure in elderly people.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that there is lack of awareness among elderly individuals regarding their blood pressure levels and the associated risks. Many elderly people underestimate the importance of regular monitoring and may not seek timely medical intervention, which exacerbates their condition (Burt et al., 1995). More so, the role of healthcare systems in managing hypertension among the elderly is also problematic. Many healthcare providers lack adequate resources or training to implement effective prevention and management strategies tailored to older adults (Whelton et al., 2018).
Additionally, the aging process contributes to physiological changes that increase blood pressure, making it essential to understand how these changes correlate with the lifestyle factors prevalent in older adults. Factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and dietary habits significantly influence blood pressure but are often overlooked in preventive strategies (Kearney et al., 2005).
Furthermore, socioeconomic factors, including access to healthcare and health education, significantly affect the ability of elderly individuals to prevent and manage hypertension. Many elderly people face financial constraints that limit their access to necessary health services, contributing to the persistent challenges in hypertension control (Zhang et al., 2018). Addressing these problems is crucial for improving the health outcomes of elderly individuals affected by high blood pressure. Without effective intervention strategies that consider these multifaceted issues, the burden of hypertension among the elderly population is likely to continue escalating.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to assess the causes and prevention strategies of high blood pressure among elderly individuals. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To identify and analyze the common causes of high blood pressure in elderly individuals, including lifestyle factors, dietary habits, and genetic predisposition.
- To evaluate the current knowledge and awareness of hypertension among elderly individuals regarding its risks, symptoms, and management strategies.
- To explore the role of healthcare systems in providing support and resources for the management and prevention of hypertension among the elderly.
- To examine the effectiveness of existing prevention strategies and interventions aimed at reducing high blood pressure in elderly people.
- To assess the prevalence of high blood pressure among the elderly population in the selected study area.
- To make recommendations based on the findings to enhance awareness and improve preventive measures against high blood pressure in the elderly population.
1.4 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the research study are stated below as follows:
- Are there primary causes of high blood pressure among elderly individuals in the selected study area?
- How prevalent is high blood pressure among the elderly population in the study area?
- What lifestyle factors and dietary habits are most associated with the development of high blood pressure in elderly people?
- To what extent do elderly individuals understand the risks and symptoms of high blood pressure?
- What preventive measures and strategies are currently in place to manage and prevent high blood pressure in elderly individuals, and how effective are they?
- How do healthcare providers support the elderly in managing and preventing high blood pressure?
- What barriers do elderly individuals face in accessing preventive care and resources for hypertension management?
- Are there barriers encountered by elderly individuals in accessing preventive care and resources for hypertension management?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The hypotheses for assessing the causes and prevention of high blood pressure in elderly people are as follows:
- Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant relationship between lifestyle factors and the prevalence of high blood pressure among elderly individuals.
- Alternative Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant relationship between lifestyle factors (such as diet, physical activity, and stress levels) and the prevalence of high blood pressure among elderly individuals.
1.6 Significance of Study
The findings of this study will provide healthcare professionals with critical insights into the causes and prevention strategies for high blood pressure in elderly patients, enabling them to tailor their interventions more effectively.
- Healthcare policymakers will benefit from the study by gaining evidence-based recommendations for developing health policies that specifically address hypertension management and prevention among the elderly population.
- Elderly individuals and their families will find the results valuable, as they will offer practical information on lifestyle changes and preventive measures that can be adopted to manage blood pressure effectively.

1.7 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on assessing the causes and prevention of high blood pressure in elderly people.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: A more extended research period would have allowed for a deeper investigation into the complexities surrounding high blood pressure in the elderly population, leading to richer insights and more robust recommendations.
- Financial Constraint: Limited funding restricted the resources available for conducting a more extensive study, including outreach, participant recruitment, and data analysis tools, which may have influenced the depth and breadth of the research.
- Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.
1.9 Definition of Terms
High Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is defined as a chronic medical condition characterized by elevated pressure in the arteries, typically identified by a systolic blood pressure reading of 140 mmHg or higher and/or a diastolic reading of 90 mmHg or higher (World Health Organization, 2021).
Elderly:
The elderly population generally refers to individuals aged 65 years and older, although the definition can vary based on the context and specific research. This age group often experiences various health challenges, including a higher prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension (United Nations, 2019).
Causes:
In the context of high blood pressure, causes refer to the various factors that contribute to the development and progression of the condition. These can include genetic predisposition, lifestyle choices (such as diet and physical activity), and environmental influences (Mills et al., 2016).
Prevention:
Prevention encompasses the strategies and measures aimed at reducing the risk of developing high blood pressure and its complications. These strategies may include lifestyle modifications, such as adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress (American Heart Association, 2020).
Lifestyle Factors:
Lifestyle factors include behavioral and environmental influences that can affect an individual's health and well-being. For high blood pressure, significant lifestyle factors include diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking (Whelton et al., 2018).
Chronic Diseases:
Chronic diseases are long-lasting conditions that often require ongoing medical attention and management. High blood pressure is considered a chronic disease, as it typically persists over time and can lead to other health complications if not managed properly (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
