ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to comprehensively analyze the Causes, Effect and Solution to Population Growth in Nigeria. Investigation revealed that the rapid population growth affects family structures and community dynamics. Also, the burgeoning population drives increased demand for land, water, and energy, leading to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and heightened pollution levels. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 100 (one hundred) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. The findings of this research will provide policymakers valuable insights into the underlying factors driving population growth and its impact on different sectors, enabling them to design more effective policies and interventions. Also, government agencies will benefit from evidence-based recommendations that can help in allocating resources more efficiently and addressing infrastructure and public service challenges. Based on the findings, it was recommended that investment in education should be prioritized, with a particular focus on improving access to quality education for women and girls. Furthermore, sustainable land use and environmental management practices should be adopted to mitigate the adverse effects of rapid population growth.

Causes, Effect and Solution to Population Growth in Nigeria (A Case Study of Esan Central Local Government Area)

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

Population growth refers to the increase in the number of individuals in a population over time. It is typically measured by the annual rate of change in population size, which results from the balance between birth rates, death rates, and net migration (United Nations Population Division, 2021). Population growth in Nigeria has become one of the most pressing issues affecting the country's socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. As one of the most populous nations in Africa, Nigeria's population dynamics are influenced by a combination of demographic, cultural, and economic factors. According to the National Population Commission (2022), Nigeria's population is projected to reach over 400 million by 2050, making it the third most populous country in the world. This rapid increase presents both opportunities and challenges that require urgent attention and effective management.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.

1.2 Background of Study

The background of the study on the causes, effects, and solutions to population growth in Nigeria provides a contextual understanding of the dynamics influencing the country’s demographic trends and their broader implications. Nigeria, as Africa's most populous nation, has experienced significant population growth over the past few decades, driven by various socio-economic and cultural factors. According to the National Population Commission (2022), Nigeria's population has been growing at a rate of approximately 2.6% per year, leading to substantial demographic changes.

In the pre-colonial era, Nigeria's population was relatively stable, with growth rates constrained by factors such as disease, famine, and local resource limitations. However, the introduction of new agricultural practices, improved sanitation, and trade during the colonial period led to significant changes in population trends (Falola & Heaton, 2008). The colonial administration's infrastructure projects and public health initiatives contributed to lower mortality rates and set the stage for more rapid population growth in the post-independence era.

Following Nigeria's independence in 1960, the country experienced substantial demographic changes. The population grew rapidly due to high birth rates and declining death rates. The post-independence period saw significant improvements in healthcare and living standards, which contributed to increased life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates (National Population Commission, 2022). These advancements resulted in a demographic transition characterized by high population growth rates.

The 1970s and 1980s marked a period of rapid urbanization and economic development, which further accelerated population growth. The expansion of cities and the influx of people seeking better opportunities contributed to urban sprawl and strained existing infrastructure (Afolabi & Akinwale, 2011). During this period, Nigeria's population growth rate was among the highest in the world, driven by both high fertility rates and increased life expectancy.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, the Nigerian government began to recognize the challenges posed by rapid population growth and initiated several policies aimed at addressing these issues. The introduction of family planning programs and reproductive health initiatives aimed to reduce fertility rates and manage population growth (United Nations Population Division, 2021). Despite these efforts, the effectiveness of such programs was limited by factors such as inadequate resources, cultural resistance, and insufficient public awareness.

In recent years, the focus has shifted towards more comprehensive approaches to managing population growth. The Nigerian government has increasingly emphasized the need for sustainable development, improved education, and economic development as part of its population management strategy (World Bank, 2020). One of the primary causes of rapid population growth in Nigeria is the high birth rate. Cultural values and traditions play a significant role in shaping family size preferences. In many Nigerian communities, large families are perceived as a sign of wealth and status, and children are often seen as contributors to household labor and future financial security (Mason & Smith, 2018). Additionally, a high fertility rate, averaging about 5.3 children per woman (World Bank, 2020), exacerbates population growth.

Declining mortality rates due to improvements in healthcare also contribute to the population increase. Advances in medical technology and better access to healthcare services have significantly reduced deaths from diseases and improved life expectancy (United Nations Population Division, 2021). However, the decline in mortality rates has not been matched by a corresponding reduction in birth rates, leading to an imbalance that drives population growth.

The effects of this rapid population growth are wide-ranging and complex. Economically, Nigeria faces challenges in providing adequate infrastructure, healthcare, and educational services to its growing population. This strain is evident in the country’s inability to meet the demand for quality education and healthcare services, contributing to high rates of poverty and unemployment (World Bank, 2020). Socially, overpopulation intensifies issues related to urbanization, such as overcrowded cities, inadequate housing, and increased pressure on public services.

Environmentally, the effects of rapid population growth include significant resource depletion and environmental degradation. The demand for land, water, and energy has led to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and increased pollution (IUCN, 2019). The high birth rate in Nigeria is a primary driver of population growth. Cultural norms and traditional beliefs often emphasize large family sizes, which are seen as a sign of prosperity and security. Additionally, advancements in healthcare have led to a decline in mortality rates, contributing to an imbalance between birth rates and death rates (United Nations Population Division, 2021).

The effects of rapid population growth are multifaceted. Economically, it strains Nigeria's ability to provide adequate services and infrastructure for its growing population. This strain is evident in sectors such as healthcare, education, and housing, where resources are stretched thin (World Bank, 2020). Socially, overpopulation contributes to increased poverty rates, unemployment, and social inequality. Environmentally, the pressures of urbanization and resource consumption lead to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and environmental degradation (IUCN, 2019). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the causes, effect and solution to population growth.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that the rapid population growth in Nigeria presents a range of significant problems that impact various aspects of the country's development and well-being. One of the primary issues is the strain on infrastructure and public services. As Nigeria's population continues to expand, the demand for essential services such as healthcare, education, and transportation outpaces the available resources. This strain results in overcrowded schools, inadequate healthcare facilities, and insufficient transportation networks, ultimately affecting the quality of life and social equity (World Bank, 2020).

Another critical problem is the environmental degradation caused by rapid urbanization and resource consumption. The burgeoning population drives increased demand for land, water, and energy, leading to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and heightened pollution levels. This environmental impact not only contributes to the degradation of natural habitats but also exacerbates issues related to climate change and sustainable development (IUCN, 2019).

Economically, the effects of population growth include heightened unemployment and poverty levels. The influx of people into urban areas without corresponding job opportunities creates economic pressures and increases the informal sector's size. This scenario results in higher rates of poverty and social inequality, as many individuals struggle to find stable employment and improve their living standards (National Population Commission, 2022).

Socially, rapid population growth affects family structures and community dynamics. High fertility rates and large family sizes can strain household resources and affect the overall well-being of families. Additionally, population growth can lead to increased competition for educational and economic opportunities, which may exacerbate social tensions and contribute to instability (United Nations Population Division, 2021). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by identifying the causes, effect and solution to population growth.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Population Growth: Population growth refers to the increase in the number of individuals in a population over time. It is typically measured by the annual rate of change in population size, which results from the balance between birth rates, death rates, and net migration (United Nations Population Division, 2021).

Birth Rate: Birth rate is the number of live births per 1,000 people in a given year. It is a critical factor influencing population growth, with higher birth rates contributing to faster population increases (World Bank, 2020).

Mortality Rate: Mortality rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 people in a given year. Declines in mortality rates due to improved healthcare and living conditions often contribute to population growth by increasing life expectancy (National Population Commission, 2022).

Urbanization: Urbanization refers to the process by which increasing numbers of people move from rural areas to urban areas, resulting in the growth of cities and towns. Rapid urbanization can strain infrastructure and resources, impacting overall development (Afolabi & Akinwale, 2011).

Infrastructure: Infrastructure encompasses the physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. in the context of population growth, it includes transportation networks, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and utilities (World Bank, 2020).
