    Voltage fluctuation is one of the major problems facing consumers of electric power. As a result, many types of equipment are damaged while others cannot function properly. Due to this problem, Automatic Voltage Regulator has been devised to serve as a solution to this voltage fluctuation. When this is done, fluctuation and instability associated with alternating power is overcome.

    This project seeks to find solution to the problem of voltage fluctuation by construction of a 2000W automatic voltage regulator (AVR) using several components such as operational Amplifier, Transistor, IC, Resistor, Capacity, Relay etc.

    The aim of this project is to assemble this various components on a Vero board, making necessary soldering in order to achieve a workable 2000W Automatic Voltage Regulator.

    • Chapter one of this work forms the introductory aspect of this project. The important terms were defined and commented briefly on.
    • Chapter two is the literature review here; the various development and brief history on AVR by some Engineers were enumerated.
    • In Chapter three of this report, the various procedures that were adopted in the designing of the circuit. Starting from the project board, Vero board, soldering, and caring of the entire work were discussed exhaustively.
    • Finally, chapter four of this project report is the conclusion and recommendation by the designers followed closely by the reference.


    1.0 Introduction

    Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a device which is used to regulate or stabilize electrical power supply for electrical and electronic appliances. This device is used to keep the voltage level from public power supply system constant i.e. between 110V to 260V which is the minimum and maximum range respectively. It regulates the supply voltage to produce a constant output voltage of 220V

    This device also serves as a protective device for our appliances connected directly to it, while the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is connected direct to the power supply. The protective system in automatic voltage Regulator (AVR) works in such a way that if there is an excess current or over voltage (voltage surge) from the public power supply, the AVR will either regulate or stabilize the voltage to 220V output for our appliances or the fuse in the AVR will rapture by excess current of the surge and thereby cut-off the incoming power supply.

    The stabilization and regulation is achieved through the control circuit which includes relays and the 24x2V which is from the secondary winding of the auto-transformer used for the construction.

    This control unit does the work of cut and boost in the case of higher and lower voltage respectively. If the supply voltage drops below 220V down to 180V, the primary control does the work of boast which will bring the output to normal 220V while if the voltage increases above 220V up to 260V, it does the work of cut. The coil of the relays is triggered by 24V D.C.
