ABSTRACT

A Power Failure Indicator with Automatic Changeover is an electronic device that detects power failure in a place by switching on an indicator which could be in the form of an emergency light, night-light, flash light and power failure alarm. All these units function are completely automatic, one the unit has been plugged into a standard 220V power supply. Alternate embodiments of the devices are specifically intended to alert and notify the user of a power failure.

An audible power-loss alarm indicates when electrical power has been cut-off to an appliance. The external components comprise a plastic housing, an alarm speaker, a battery compartment, a charging indicator light. Plug-in outlets, plug-in blades, and an on-off switch. The internal components comprises a sound producing unit, batteries, unit-activation equipment, and electrical components.

The device utilizes logic circuitry to determine if a power failure has occurred. The battery charging and monitoring circuits ensure that the batteries are always charged and ready for use.

The device is of many types with different designs and constructions. It is very much important especially in the field of engineering. For example, in an uninterrupted power supply construction, power failure alarm with an automatic changeover is built in it to detect when power failure (standard power supply) and changes over to the inverted (back-up power) immediately.

However, Power Failure Indicator with Automatic Changeover is used in companies to enable them to know when there is power outage in any of the power sources so that they switches over to another source immediately especially in the case where the operation is manual.

1.0 Introduction

With the advent and increasing technology in the world, there is need for efficiency and reliability in the power section. Civilization was to provide among other things an uninterrupted power supply.

Power failure indicator with automatic changeover system are normally used with appliances that needs constant power supply or a gradual process of switching their power supply (e.g. computer, transmission station).

Audible techniques are more efficient than other means of power failure indicator (e.g. switching off of a bulb when power fails).

However, prior audible techniques do not provide a simple, in expensive and effective audible means of alerting users to the loss of power to appliances that users can employ in almost any location. Therefore, there is a need for a simple, inexpensive, and effective audible means of alerting users to the loss of power to appliance. To a large extent, this project provides these qualities.

The realization of this project would have been complex without the use of the integrated circuit (555 timer).

1.1 Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of a power failure indicator and automatic changeover is to alert the user, so that the user can be aware and put all (things) appliances in proper condition while the alternative power source powers the appliance while waiting to put the main power source in place (e.g. uninterrupted power supply).

Also this project helps to reduce the rate of change caused by the unexpected switching on and off of appliances and reduces money loss by most companies.


1.2 Application of the Study

This works mainly used in areas where constant power supply is needed. It is also used in a three phase power supply where an alert come on when either or all the phases. Fail and switches over to an alternative power supply, the sensing sensor also sense the phase with the higher and normal voltage and switches to that phase.
