Contemporary Female Designs Inspired by African Art

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction

African art is a distinct art in itself and has its own character, and this goes back to prehistoric times, as the various paintings and rock art scattered in the African deserts date back to the ancient Stone Age. Contemporary refers to the now of the paintings, contemporary Nigerian artists distinguish themselves with some unique characteristics (Ajiboye et al., 2018). Although women dress to cover nakedness, their dressings are also used to beautify their bodies, show group cultural heritage, and are also recognized as markers of life stages in the society. Thus, women’s dressings can be analysed as a type of body language that speaks to particular orientations and identities. This suggests as Wiley points out that they can, therefore, be interpreted in varying ways by both wearers and viewers (Wiley, 2013, p. 77).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

1.2 Background of Study

In the contemporary era, this dress form is intended to locate the wearers within a latent aesthetic theory, which states that ‘the main reason for dressing for social events is to be attractive enough to be looked upon’ (Diyaolu, 2010, p. 36). This perhaps accounts for making asoebi an aesthetic cultural element to be referenced in the painting of Musa. Although Musa is from the northern part of Nigeria, the influence on him in this representation is from Yoruba culture. This stems from his relationship with people in Yoruba culture and as the immediate environment where he lived – in the southwest of Nigeria.

Fashion design is one of the arts that have a prominent role in expressing the renaissance and the nature of societies, and the flourishing of this art increases with the development that takes place in the fulfilment of the aesthetic and functional needs of individuals in various sectors of society. Since it is one of the plastic arts that the designer formulates in the form of clothing designs that the artist derived from one of the other artistic sources, and by considering the wealth of African arts, it becomes clear that it is characterized by diversity and plurality, in addition to being dependent on its own symbols of artistic styles and trends, which are evident in the multiple decorations.

Formal occasion is an occasion that is meant for formal gatherings eg interviews, meeting, board room meetings etc. each and every one of these occasions requires a specific wear or out fit for it. In Boardroom meetings, one needs to dress in a cooperate or formal outfit. A female worker attending boardroom meetings should dress nice and decent in a formal manner because your appearance speaks more of you one cannot wear an outfit meant for parties to a meeting.

Although women’s cultural dress forms may appear to resonate with different ethnic groups in Nigeria, sometimes they reveal cultural over-lapping or influences of shared cultures as well. Despite this stance, cultural dress forms in any society may be described as a mirror of the culture of the people. Therefore, if this subject is discussed normatively from society to society, we must interpret them differently.

Formal wears come in different styles and designs. They can be a suit of different styles, skirts and shirts, trousers and shirts and a dress of different styles and designs. But no matter one’s choice of style it has to be formal. Formal wears for board room meeting can be sews with various materials such as veritable wax, garbadine, suit materials, London wax even local fabrics like kente, Ankara etc and also synthetic fabrics and blends. However, a sticking discovery about what most female workers wore to meetings has been made. Most of the female workers wears suit to board room meetings not knowing that other materials can e used in making a co-operate and decent outfits for these meetings.

The circumstances that led the choice of fabric and design that will be use in execution of the work is that the materials are durable and it is a design that will not go out of trend. The wearer will feel comfortable with it and being that in most boardroom meetings the environment is always cool. With this design the wearer won’t feel cold or hot because of the texture of the fabrics and the design.

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the Contemporary Female Designs Inspired by African Art.

1.3 Statement of Problems

Investigate revealed that most of the female workers wore suit or ready-made wears to meetings while other materials like Ankara, kente etc can be used for the same purpose. Most of their wears shows all the erogenous part of their body which is not good for the occasion. Formal occasion are business like occasions, so the outfit you wear has to be formal and decent enough.

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
  3. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
  4. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
