ABSTRACT


Computerized PTO/GSM Recharge Voucher Generator is a prepaid code that allows subscribers to load airtime or data into their mobile phones. The aim of this study is to design and implement a PTO/GSM recharge voucher generator that ensures security, transparency, and efficiency in voucher management for Globacom. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that the existing system of recharge voucher generation is prone to duplication of codes, leading to customer dissatisfaction. Also, manual voucher generation processes are inefficient and time-consuming. The methodology adopted in this study is the object oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The web programming languages (HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, and PHP) was used in the software development process because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. The implementation of this research study will serve Globacom by strengthening its operational efficiency and ensuring accountability in the distribution of vouchers. It will also provide the company with a system that will safeguard its revenue base, streamline processes, and reduce the cost associated with manual voucher production and management. The expected result is a computerized PTO/GSM Recharge Voucher Generator that will prevent fraudulent voucher generation, enhance operational efficiency, and reduces manual errors.




1.1 Introduction

A recharge voucher, also known as an airtime card, is a prepaid card or digital code that allows subscribers of a telecommunication network to load credit into their mobile phones for making calls, sending messages, or accessing internet services. It serves as a vital medium through which telecommunication companies provide easy and flexible access to services, especially in regions where mobile banking and online payment infrastructures are still developing (Nwachukwu, 2018). In Nigeria, the use of recharge vouchers is an essential component of mobile communication as it offers subscribers the convenience of pay-as-you-go services and enables telecommunication operators to generate substantial revenue (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2020).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. 1.2 Background of Study

The background of this study is rooted in the role of recharge vouchers as a vital component of telecommunication services, particularly within prepaid systems that dominate mobile communication in Nigeria. Recharge vouchers provide subscribers with access to voice calls, text messaging, and data services, making them indispensable for everyday communication. According to Nwachukwu (2018), recharge vouchers serve as one of the most effective methods for expanding telecommunication access in developing economies, given their affordability and wide availability (Nwachukwu, 2018).

Globacom, as one of Nigeria's leading telecommunication companies, relies heavily on recharge voucher sales for revenue generation. Okafor and Adeyemi (2020) reported that more than 70% of mobile subscribers in Nigeria depend on prepaid recharge systems, which underscores the critical importance of ensuring their reliability. However, inefficiencies and fraudulent practices within voucher generation processes have undermined the effectiveness of this system. Olowe (2021) asserted that issues such as duplication, theft, and unauthorized reproduction of vouchers have caused both financial losses to telecommunication firms and dissatisfaction among subscribers (Olowe, 2021).

The rapid growth of the Nigerian telecommunication sector has increased the demand for recharge vouchers. Companies like Globacom, MTN, and Airtel rely heavily on voucher sales as a major source of income. However, the existing methods of voucher generation and distribution are often plagued by inefficiencies such as duplication, fraud, and unauthorized reproduction of codes, which create significant challenges for both service providers and subscribers (Olowe, 2021). In many cases, customers are left frustrated when vouchers purchased in good faith turn out to be invalid, resulting in loss of trust in the system.

Several studies have pointed to the limitations of manual and semi-automated voucher systems. Akinyemi (2019) stated that the absence of secure platforms for voucher generation has created vulnerabilities that are frequently exploited by fraudsters. Similarly, Okoro and Eze (2020) affirmed that fraudulent practices in Nigeria's telecommunication sector are fueled by weak technological infrastructures that fail to adequately secure recharge codes and transaction records. In line with this, Bello (2022) contend that the adoption of innovative, automated systems is essential in promoting transparency, ensuring operational efficiency, and protecting both providers and consumers from fraud.

The challenges encountered that led to the execution of the research work is that, the existing manual methods of generating and distributing recharge vouchers are prone to errors, duplication, and illegal reproduction, which results in huge financial losses for network providers and dissatisfaction among customers (Akinyemi, 2019). On the other hand, telecommunication companies like Globacom face increasing pressure to expand their services, ensure customer satisfaction, and maintain competitiveness in a rapidly advancing digital age. Without a reliable and automated system, the ability of Globacom to meet the growing demand for fast, secure, and reliable recharge services is being threatened (Olowe, 2021). This research study is set against the backdrop of designing and implementing a PTO/GSM recharge voucher generator for Globacom to address the pressing issues of inefficiency, fraud, and customer dissatisfaction in recharge voucher management.


1.3 Statement of the Problems

Based on the investigation conducted, the implemented system encounters a number of challenges, with some of the most significant issues outlined below.

  1. The existing system of recharge voucher generation is prone to duplication of codes, leading to customer dissatisfaction.
  2. Fraudulent practices are common due to weak security measures in the current system.
  3. Manual voucher generation processes are inefficient and time-consuming.
  4. The existing system lacks transparency and accountability in voucher distribution.
  5. There is inadequate protection of transaction records, leaving room for manipulation.
  6. Customer trust is undermined due to the frequent invalidation of purchased recharge vouchers.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to design and implement a PTO/GSM recharge voucher generator that ensures security, transparency, and efficiency in voucher management for Globacom. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To create a reliable PTO/GSM recharge voucher generation system that ensures accuracy and minimizes duplication.
  2. To develop a secure database structure for storing generated recharge voucher details and transaction records.
  3. To design a user-friendly interface that allows administrators to efficiently manage and generate recharge vouchers.
  4. To implement security mechanisms that prevent unauthorized access and fraudulent voucher generation.
  5. To develop a functional prototype of the recharge voucher generator for Globacom that enhances operational efficiency and reduces manual errors.

1.5 Significance of Study

The implementation of the proposed system and the accompanying research documentation is highly significant in the following ways.

  1. The study will provide a secure and automated PTO/GSM recharge voucher generator that will reduce the risks of duplication, fraud, and unauthorized access which have long undermined customer trust and company revenue.
  2. The outcome of this study will serve Globacom by strengthening its operational efficiency and ensuring accountability in the distribution of vouchers. It will also provide the company with a system that will safeguard its revenue base, streamline processes, and reduce the cost associated with manual voucher production and management.
  3. Subscribers will also benefit from this study, as the system will guarantee the availability of authentic recharge vouchers and eliminate frustrations associated with invalid or duplicated codes.
  4. Academically, the study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on information systems design and telecommunication management. It will serve as a reference point for students, researchers, and developers interested in the design and implementation of secure digital solutions within the Nigerian context.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the design and implementation of a PTO/GSM recharge voucher generator within Globacom Nigeria Plc, Lagos State headquarters. It covers voucher code generation, database management, system security, and interface design while restricting its scope to recharge voucher generation and not extending to other telecommunication services.


1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Recharge Voucher: A prepaid code that allows subscribers to load airtime or data into their mobile phones. According to Nwachukwu (2018), recharge vouchers are vital tools for enabling access to prepaid services.

PTO (Public Telecommunication Operator): A licensed entity that provides telecommunication services to the public. Okafor and Adeyemi (2020) stated that PTOs play a critical role in the delivery of prepaid mobile services in Nigeria.

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication): A standard digital mobile communication system that enables voice, SMS, and data services. Olowe (2021) asserted that GSM technology revolutionized telecommunication services in Nigeria.

Voucher Generator: A software application designed to create secure and unique recharge voucher codes. Bello (2022) affirmed that voucher generators are essential for ensuring transparency and minimizing fraud.

Database: An organized system for storing and retrieving data efficiently. Akinyemi (2019) contended that databases provide the backbone of secure voucher storage and management.
