    ABSTRACT

Student registration system is a computer based system that defines the means of providing adequate resources for analyzing, designing and recording student related records. The aim of this study is to design and implement a Computerized Students Registration System. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to develop an application software that will create a file for the academic records of the student into an appropriate form and convert the score of each offered by the student into an appropriate grade. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that the manual system of recording student registration has been found to be cumbersome tedious and time consuming, the mode of storage and retrieving of student’s registration inadequate. The methodology adopted in this study is the object oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. The automated admission processing system will help reduce some of the laborious work involve in student admission processing, maximized returns for the institution, provide a friendly user interface to users. The expected result is a Computerized Students Registration System that will process student’s credentials and generates an accurate screening information details.

Design and Implementation of Students Registration System

    1.1 Introduction

Student registration system is a computer based system that defines the means of providing adequate resources for analyzing, designing and recording student related records like: student registration procedure, payment system as well as their academic records. When a person becomes a prospective student in any institution of higher learning, a record contains the information about the student like: full name, sex, date of birth, marital status, religion, state of origin, nationality, permanent addressed e.t.c. A well organized and well automated, student registration system will and academic research, equip the institution with relevant information so as to make a strict all vision to any student in cases of emergency and also to prevent the occurrence of certain academic vices. Well automated student registration system the institution was bequeathed with, they were able to detect easily that he had no academic record in the aforementioned institution.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.

    1.2 Background of the Study

Faculty of information and communication technology was formerly a satellite campus of the Ibadan Polytechnic, Iree in October 1992. The faculty was one of the pioneered faculties that took off with the institution as Osun Polytechnic in October 1992. The faculty had resources accreditation for ND programmes in 1973 and subsequently full accreditation in 1995, thirty students were admitted for this program (ND 1 Computer science) as pioneer students.

Faculty of information and communication technology is one of the faculties in Osun State Polytechnic Iree, who is offering training to people who are not computer literate. This faculty of information and communication technology offers quick training in computer operations, data entry and use of various programming language. It runs appropriate program for secondary school leaves graduates of college of education, polytechnic and universities. It also trains business executives and management staff. The relevant of registration concerning her registration are full name, sex, date of birth, marital status, state of origin, nationality, permanent address and the sponsors.

In the past years, an inspection at close observation of some admission offices in some reputable tertiary institution revealed that there has been lack of proper documentaries of admission forms. Also, much time was spent in sorting out qualified and non qualified forms. This has resulted to a meaningful lost of substantial efficiency and accuracy in the methods used for instance, in many tertiary institution, one could not adequately give details of applicants such as the total number of these that applied the number that qualified from each state or local government.

When one looked back with analytical mid, we can concluded that computer technology keeps an advancing with remarkable increase in speed accuracy and reliability. Computing in whatever field i.e. science, Business and industry is reaching directly or indirectly into various aspect of our society without loss of generality, the world has shrunk into such compactness that no part can afford to lack behind or lie in isolation.

The advert of computer was hated by the world as a great revolution like any industry revolution. It promised to free and from simple routine jobs of respective nature by providing computing power. The first to have exploited the facility was the search for scientific acquires, this was not unconnected with the fact the designers by these systems were Scientifics themselves. Several problems have been eliding satisfactory solutions through, numerical methods of solution exist but involved a very huge amount of computation then, by rendering the problem in accurately accomplished. Not only did computer make reliable solution possible it equally opened new application methods. The focus of this project work is to develop an computerized Students Registration System that shall bring about this paradigm shift, in other to proffer solution to the challenges inherent in the existing system implemented by Lagos state polytechnic. The proposed system: Automated admission processing System shall be developed using HTML, CSS and PHP as the frontend, and MY SQL database management system as the backend (Desile, 2009).

The afore-motional processes are carried out in this project with the aid of computer. There is no doubt that is these present days is as a result of the benefit derived from the prime requirement where are completing for skilled job today. The reality is that the factory machinery is computer based, air line reservations depend on compute, personnel, financial and administrative procedure has become computerized including the command and control functions of the military and the police. This is what prompt the development of a software which will help management of Osun State College of Education, Ila In the area of student admission.

    1.3 Statement of Problem

Investigation revealed that the manual system of recording student registration has been found to be cumbersome tedious and time consuming, the mode of storage and retrieving of student’s registration inadequate. It is done manually by clerical staff and this is proving to un-availability of a centralized pool of student according to their specific duration of programme.

Also, the awarding of grades is manual, the scores and marks of the student are word processed and the result is printed out. Hence the need for the automation of the system is expedient.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study

The aim of this study is to design and implement a Computerized Students Registration System. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to develop an application software that will:

    1. Create a file for the academic records of the student into an appropriate form.
    2. Create a database per the registration procedure of the institution;
    3. Create a file that will handle the payment of fees by the student; and
    4. Convert the score of each offered by the student into an appropriate grade.

    1.5 Significance of the Study

The proposed system implementation will be beneficial in the following ways:

    1. It quickens the registration procedure and leads to the avoidance of duplication of efforts.
    2. It provides facilities for decision making process and control redundancy (duplication of data).
    3. It reduces cost of labour force responsible for scoring and awarding of grades is greatly reduced.
    4. It reduces inefficiency and inaccuracy
    5. It generally saves time and prevent loss of data i.e. data during completion of forms in the manual registration process.

This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.

    1.6 Scope of the Study

The scope of this research focuses on the Design and Implementation of a Computerized Students Registration System using Osun State Polytechnic Iree as a case study.

    1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
    3. Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
    4. Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
    5. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials.

    1.8 Definition of Terms

Admission: The process of accepting students for study at an institution.

Processing: To deal with somebody or something according to an established procedure.

System: Set of computer components which are an assembly of computer Hardware, Software and peripherals functioning together.
