1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
Over the years, agricultural cooperatives dates back to the early 19th century in Europe, where they were established as a response to the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in accessing resources, technology, and markets. In Nigeria, the concept of agricultural cooperatives began gaining traction after the country gained independence in 1960. The government recognized the need to empower smallholder farmers by facilitating their access to collective resources, better markets, and extension services, thus supporting the growth of the agricultural sector (Sulaiman & Fashola, 2013). Agricultural cooperatives in Nigeria initially focused on cash crops such as cocoa, oil palm, and cotton, which were major export commodities. However, as food security became a growing concern, there was a shift in focus towards other staple crops like cassava. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) has always been a fundamental part of Nigerian agriculture, serving as a key staple food crop, with Nigeria being the world's largest producer (FAO, 2019).
Agricultural cooperatives have become a significant force in enhancing agricultural production, particularly in rural areas where smallholder farmers face numerous challenges. In many developing countries, such as Nigeria, cassava is a vital crop, both as a food source and a means of livelihood for millions of people. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2013), cassava is a major staple crop in tropical countries, contributing to food security and poverty reduction. However, despite its importance, cassava production is often constrained by issues such as inadequate access to credit, poor infrastructure, limited knowledge of modern farming techniques, and unstable market prices (Ogunniyi, 2015).
According to FAO (2013), agricultural cooperatives have long been recognized as a critical element in improving agricultural productivity, particularly in developing countries where small-scale farming predominates. These cooperatives serve as collective organizations where farmers can pool resources, share knowledge, and increase their bargaining power in the market. In the context of cassava production, cooperatives can play a transformative role by providing access to quality inputs, modern farming techniques, and better market opportunities. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a staple crop in many tropical regions, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where it serves as a primary source of food and income for millions of smallholder farmers (FAO, 2013). Despite its potential, cassava farmers face numerous challenges, including limited access to capital, poor infrastructure, and fluctuating market prices, which impede their productivity and income levels. Agricultural cooperatives have been identified as an effective means of addressing these challenges by fostering collaboration and providing a platform for collective action (Harrison, 2012).
In the case of cassava production, cooperatives can enhance the overall productivity of farmers by facilitating access to improved seed varieties, fertilizers, and extension services, which ultimately leads to higher yields (Ajayi et al., 2015). Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the effect of agricultural cooperatives in the production of cassava.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that there is issue of governance within cooperatives is a major barrier to their effectiveness. In many cases, poor management practices and a lack of transparency in decision-making processes lead to conflicts and the mismanagement of resources, which diminishes the overall success of the cooperative (Umunna, 2015). The inefficiency in the management of cooperative funds and resources prevents cassava farmers from benefiting fully from the collective opportunities that cooperatives should offer.
Furthermore, while cassava has the potential to be a highly lucrative crop, the lack of market linkages and processing facilities limits the income potential of farmers. Agricultural cooperatives often struggle to secure stable market outlets for their cassava products, and without proper processing facilities, cassava remains underutilized, as farmers are unable to process it into higher-value products such as cassava flour, chips, or ethanol (Nwachukwu, 2016). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by exploring the effect of agricultural cooperatives on the production of cassava, focusing on how these organizations influence farmers' productivity, income, and overall socio-economic conditions.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to assess the effect of agricultural cooperatives on the production of cassava in Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to:
- Examine the role of agricultural cooperatives in improving the productivity and income of cassava farmers.
- Identify the key factors that influence the success or failure of cassava-producing cooperatives.
- Assess the impact of cooperative membership on the adoption of modern farming techniques and technologies among cassava farmers.
- Evaluate the availability and effectiveness of support services (such as training, extension services, and access to credit) provided by agricultural cooperatives to cassava farmers.
- Investigate the challenges faced by agricultural cooperatives in terms of market access, infrastructure, and governance, and how these challenges affect cassava production.
- Provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives in enhancing cassava production.
1.4 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How do agricultural cooperatives create platforms for collective organization among cassava farmers to improve productivity and market access?
- In what ways do agricultural cooperatives design support systems, such as training, financial resources, and access to modern technologies, to enhance cassava production?
- What role do agricultural cooperatives play in maintaining sustainable farming practices and ensuring the long-term viability of cassava production?
- What are the challenges faced by agricultural cooperatives in maintaining effective collaboration among members and providing consistent support to cassava farmers?
- How does cooperative membership influence the adoption of improved farming techniques and technologies in cassava production?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H01: Agricultural cooperatives have no significant effect on the production of cassava, and their role in creating, designing, and maintaining support systems for farmers does not lead to improved outcomes.
- H02: Agricultural cooperatives do not significantly improve cassava production by creating better opportunities for collective organization, designing support systems for farmers, and maintaining sustainable farming practices.
1.6 Significance of Study
The findings of this study will help policymakers understand the critical role of cooperatives in enhancing the productivity and profitability of cassava farmers. The study will also contribute to the development of strategies aimed at improving farmers' access to resources such as credit, training, and marketing, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Additionally, this research will guide agricultural organizations in designing interventions that strengthen the capacity of cooperatives to support their members effectively.
Furthermore, the findings will assist agricultural researchers and extension workers in tailoring support services to meet the specific needs of cassava farmers, ultimately leading to increased production and improved livelihoods in rural communities.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study on the effect of agricultural cooperatives in the production of cassava will focus on selected agricultural cooperatives in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria. The study will examine how these cooperatives impact cassava production in terms of productivity, access to resources, training, and marketing opportunities.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The limitation of this study on the effect of agricultural cooperatives in the production of cassava was the availability of accurate and up-to-date data. Some cooperatives faced challenges in providing detailed records due to inconsistent documentation practices.
Furthermore, financial and time constraints restricted the ability to visit all the relevant cooperative groups in Ogun State, limiting the research study's scope to a smaller number of cooperatives.
Additionally, frequent power outages and transportation challenges in some rural areas were obstacles that delayed fieldwork and data collection. Respondents' reluctance to participate in interviews also posed a challenge, as some farmers were hesitant to share information about their cooperative experiences, possibly due to concerns over confidentiality or distrust.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Agricultural Cooperatives: Agricultural cooperatives are organizations formed by farmers to collectively engage in the production, processing, and marketing of agricultural products. These cooperatives provide farmers with better access to resources such as credit, inputs, and markets, thereby improving their production capacity and profitability (Oni, 2015).
Cassava: Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a root crop widely cultivated in tropical regions. It is a major staple food, providing a significant source of calories and carbohydrates for many populations, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Its cultivation also contributes to income generation for smallholder farmers (FAO, 2018).
Cooperative Society: A cooperative society refers to an association of individuals who voluntarily cooperate for their mutual social, economic, and cultural benefit. In the agricultural sector, these societies are typically established to assist members with access to resources, credit facilities, and the collective marketing of agricultural produce (ILO, 2019).
Agricultural Production: Agricultural production refers to the processes involved in growing crops and raising livestock to provide food, raw materials, and income for farmers. It involves various stages, including land preparation, planting, cultivation, harvesting, and post-harvest management (Sullivan, 2020).
Farmers' Productivity: Farmers' productivity refers to the efficiency with which farmers produce crops or livestock. It is typically measured by output per unit of land, labor, or capital. Enhancements in productivity can arise from improvements in agricultural practices, access to technology, and input resources (Akinola et al., 2017).
Cooperative Benefits: The benefits of cooperatives include access to credit, shared resources, economies of scale, and the collective bargaining power to purchase inputs at lower costs and sell produce at better prices. These benefits contribute to improving members' agricultural output and overall economic well-being (Adeyemi, 2020).
Agricultural Extension Services: Agricultural extension services are programs designed to educate farmers on modern farming techniques, agricultural practices, and innovations. These services often play a key role in improving farm productivity and the efficient use of resources (World Bank, 2020).
Market Access: Market access refers to the ability of farmers, particularly smallholders, to sell their products at competitive prices in both local and international markets. Improved market access helps farmers increase their incomes and reduce the risks of price volatility (Gillespie, 2019).
Sustainability in Agriculture: Sustainability in agriculture involves practices that maintain or improve farm productivity over time without degrading the environment or the socio-economic conditions of farming communities. Sustainable agricultural practices include crop diversification, conservation of soil and water resources, and promoting biodiversity (Pretty, 2020).
