    ABSTRACT

Beans (Vigna unguiculata) are grain legumes which are rich, water soluble vitamins and less expensive sources of dietary proteins. The study investigates the Effect of Alkali Concentrations on the Bean Seed Coat Epoxy Composite. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to explore the motive behind the Effect of Alkali Concentrations on the Bean Seed Coat Epoxy Composite and examine the basic techniques used in determining the Alkali Concentrations on Bean Seed Coat Epoxy Composite. Alkali concentration is the most significant factor in geopolymerization process that must be taken into consideration during the synthesis of Bean Seed Coat Epoxy Composite. The Bean Seed Coat Epoxy Composite were prepared by mixing Bean Seed and alkali activator solution. The alkali activator solution used was mixture of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3). Compressive strength results showed that the optimum NaOH concentration is 8M. SEM, XRD and FTIR analysis were performed to study the transformation taken place during the geopolymer synthesis. Data used in this work is derived primary from secondary sources. The methodology therefore, is basically documentary in nature. This involves learning new facts and principles through the study of documents and records. The documents and records include journals, textbooks, newspapers, magazines, official publications etc. By putting together logically evidence derived from documents and records. Conclusion which either established facts hitherto unknown or sound generalization can be obtained. This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work.

    CHAPTER ONE

    1.1 Introduction

Beans (Vigna unguiculata) are grain legumes which are rich, water soluble vitamins and less expensive sources of dietary proteins. Beans are commonly known as the cowpea, black-eyed pea or beans, catjang, chinapeas, cowgram or southern peas, and grown in tropics and subtropics used as food for human as well as for animal (Bliss, 1972). They vary in colour, shape, size and eye-patterns. Among various types of legumes, beans is the most widely grown, traded and distributed food commodity in Nigeria (Campos-Vega and Oomar, 2010), and also exported to various countries around the world. Pesticides are poisons specifically produced to get rid of pests and other related insects (Banjo et al., 2010).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.
