1.1 Introduction
Pollution is defined as the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment, leading to adverse effects on human health, ecosystems, and the overall quality of life (World Health Organization, 2018). It manifests in various forms, including air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination, noise pollution, and plastic pollution, each contributing uniquely to environmental degradation and societal challenges (Ajayi, 2019). In contemporary society, pollution is primarily driven by human activities such as industrialization, urban expansion, deforestation, improper waste management, and the excessive use of fossil fuels (Oluwafemi & Abiola, 2021).
Industrial processes release toxic gases and chemical effluents into the air and water bodies, while vehicular emissions contribute significantly to air quality deterioration, particularly in urban centers. Agricultural practices, including the use of pesticides and fertilizers, result in soil and water pollution, affecting both human health and agricultural productivity (Adewumi, 2020).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the aim and objectives of the study. Others are significance of the study, scope of work, research hypothesis and questions, limitation of the study and definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
Pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges affecting societies globally. According to Ajayi (2019), pollution is the release of harmful substances into the environment, which negatively affects human health, ecosystems, and the overall quality of life. It is reported that rapid industrialization, urbanization, and technological advancement have significantly contributed to the increased levels of environmental pollutants in modern society (Oluwafemi & Abiola, 2021).
According to Ajayi (2019), the Industrial Revolution marked a turning point in environmental degradation, as rapid industrial growth led to increased emissions of smoke, chemicals, and waste into the environment. It is reported that urban areas began experiencing severe air and water pollution due to inadequate waste management and the uncontrolled discharge of industrial effluents into rivers and streams (Oluwafemi & Abiola, 2021).
Several scholars have asserted that air pollution, water contamination, soil degradation, and noise pollution are the most prevalent forms of pollution affecting communities worldwide (Adewumi, 2020). Ajayi (2019) stated that industrial activities discharge toxic chemicals into rivers and air, causing severe health and environmental hazards. Similarly, Eze and Nwosu (2018) affirmed that vehicular emissions and the indiscriminate burning of fossil fuels significantly deteriorate air quality, particularly in urban areas, thereby exposing populations to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Environmental scholars contend that improper waste disposal and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture exacerbate soil and water pollution, reducing agricultural productivity and threatening food security (Chukwu, 2019). It is further reported that pollution is not only a public health concern but also imposes substantial economic costs on society, including medical expenses, reduced productivity, and environmental remediation efforts (Olusanya, 2020). On the other hand, inadequate enforcement of environmental laws and low public awareness have perpetuated the persistence of pollution-related problems in many developing countries. According to Oluwafemi and Abiola (2021), climate change, loss of biodiversity, and ecosystem disruption are among the broader consequences of continued pollution, affecting sustainable societal development. This study is set against the backdrop of these environmental and societal concerns, aiming to explore the causes and effects of pollution on society.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that pollution is linked to a wide range of health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and even certain forms of cancer, impacting the quality of life of individuals and communities (Adewumi, 2020). On the other hand, pollution is not only a public health concern but also an economic burden, as the costs associated with medical care, loss of productivity, and environmental remediation place a significant strain on national resources (Eze & Nwosu, 2018).
Additionally, societal awareness and policy enforcement are often inadequate, leading to the continued degradation of natural resources and environmental sustainability. The lack of proper education on environmental protection measures and weak regulatory frameworks exacerbate the problem, leaving communities vulnerable to the adverse effects of pollution (Chukwu, 2019).
Furthermore, the cumulative impact of pollution contributes to climate change, reduced biodiversity, and compromised food security, all of which have long-term implications for societal development (Olusanya, 2020). It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to explore the causes and effects of pollution on society.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of pollution on society, identify its primary causes, and evaluate its social, economic, and environmental impacts. To achieve this aim, the study has the following objectives:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of current policies and public awareness programs in mitigating pollution.
- To identify the major sources of pollution affecting communities in Nigeria.
- To examine the health implications of environmental pollution on society.
- To assess the socio-economic and environmental impacts of pollution.
- To propose recommendations for sustainable practices and policy interventions to reduce pollution.
1.5 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, this study seeks to answer the following research questions:
- What are the major sources of pollution affecting communities in Nigeria?
- What are the health impacts of environmental pollution on society?
- How does pollution affect socio-economic activities and environmental sustainability?
- How effective are existing policies and public awareness programs in mitigating pollution?
- What strategies can be implemented to reduce pollution and promote sustainable practices?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
Based on the stated objectives, the research study formulates the following hypotheses:
Hypothesis One
- H0: There is no significant relationship between pollution and its effects on the health, socio-economic, and environmental well-being of society in Nigeria
- H1: There is a significant relationship between pollution and its effects on the health, socio-economic, and environmental well-being of society in Nigeria
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Pollution has no significant effects on the health, socio-economic, and environmental well-being of society in Nigeria
- H1: Pollution has significant effects on the health, socio-economic, and environmental well-being of society in Nigeria
1.7 Significance of Study
It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will enhance public awareness regarding the dangers of environmental pollution and the need for sustainable practices. It will also educate communities on sustainable practices and the importance of minimizing pollution exposure.
Furthermore, the study will help government agencies formulate and enforce policies aimed at reducing pollution and protecting public health. In addition, the research study will guide industries in adopting environmentally friendly practices to reduce emissions and waste.
Lastly, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers interested in environmental issues and sustainable development.
1.8 Scope of Study
The scope of this research is focused on the effect of pollution on society, specifically examining causes, health impacts, and socio-economic consequences in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study will concentrate on both urban and peri-urban areas, where industrial and human activities are most pronounced.
1.9 Limitations of the Study
A study of this nature is bound to experience certain problems as such the constraints imposed on the research include:
- Time Constraints: A study of this nature needs relatively long time during which information for accurate or at least near accurate inference could be drawn. The period of the study was short, time posed as constraints to the research.
- Financial Constraints: The research would have extended the survey to other area at the empirical level, but limitation as included cost of transportation to the source of material and the cost of time setting of the already completed work.
- Lack of Cooperation: Many of the respondents are usually aggressive on issue that border cooperation among the respondents border.
- Response Bias: The study will involve surveys and interviews with cooperative managers and members. Response bias may occur if respondents provide socially desirable answers or if there is reluctance to disclose negative financial information due to privacy concerns or fear of repercussions.
1.10 Definition of Terms
Pollution:
Pollution is defined as the introduction of harmful substances into the environment, resulting in adverse effects on human health, ecosystems, and society (Ajayi, 2019).
Air Pollution:
This refers to the presence of harmful gases and particulates in the atmosphere, mainly from industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, and burning of fossil fuels (Adewumi, 2020).
Water Pollution:
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies through industrial effluents, sewage discharge, and agricultural runoff, affecting aquatic life and human health (Oluwafemi & Abiola, 2021).
Soil Pollution:
Soil pollution is the degradation of soil quality due to chemicals, pesticides, and improper waste disposal, affecting agriculture and ecosystem balance (Chukwu, 2019).
Environmental Sustainability:
This is the responsible management of natural resources to ensure the health of ecosystems and human society in the long term (Olusanya, 2020).
Socio-economic Impact:
This refers to the effect of pollution on the economic activities, productivity, and social well-being of communities (Eze & Nwosu, 2018).
