1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
The integration of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in education has become a global priority, particularly in addressing challenges associated with traditional teaching and learning approaches. ICT encompasses a wide range of digital tools and resources, including computers, interactive software, internet access, and multimedia platforms, which have revolutionized educational practices. In mathematics education, ICT plays a vital role in enhancing the delivery of lessons, fostering engagement, and improving academic performance (Becta, 2020).
Historically, mathematics has been viewed as a challenging subject for many students due to its abstract concepts and problem-solving requirements. Teachers have often relied on traditional instructional methods, such as chalk-and-talk, which sometimes fail to cater to the diverse learning needs of students. The introduction of ICT tools, such as graphing calculators, online tutorials, and educational apps, offers dynamic ways to visualize and interact with mathematical concepts, making them more relatable and easier to comprehend (Ayodele et al., 2019).
In Nigeria, the adoption of ICT in education has been driven by national policies aimed at improving the quality of education and bridging the digital divide. The Nigerian National Policy on Education emphasizes the integration of ICT in teaching and learning to enhance students' academic outcomes across all subjects, including mathematics (Federal Ministry of Education, 2013). Despite these efforts, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher training, and lack of funding persist, hindering the effective use of ICT in many schools.
Research has shown that the use of ICT in mathematics education leads to improved problem-solving skills, better understanding of abstract concepts, and increased student motivation (Okeke & Ugwuanyi, 2020). However, the degree of impact depends on factors such as accessibility, teacher competency, and the availability of supportive resources. This study aims to explore the impact of ICT on students' academic performance in mathematics, focusing on how these tools influence teaching practices, learning outcomes, and student engagement.
The rapid advancement of Information Communication Technology (ICT) has transformed educational practices worldwide. ICT, encompassing tools like computers, projectors, and digital learning platforms, has emerged as a pivotal resource for enhancing teaching and learning experiences. In mathematics education, where abstract concepts often pose challenges, the integration of ICT has been recognized as a means to simplify complex ideas and improve academic performance (Adeoye & Bello, 2020). The global shift toward digital education has underscored the potential of ICT to make mathematics lessons more interactive, engaging, and accessible. Studies suggest that the use of ICT tools such as computer-aided instruction, online tutorials, and educational software contributes to the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students (Khan et al., 2019). However, the effectiveness of ICT in improving academic outcomes is often contingent on factors like teacher competency, resource availability, and student adaptability. In the Nigerian context, the adoption of ICT in education has faced challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to digital tools, and insufficient teacher training. Despite these hurdles, efforts have been made to integrate ICT into mathematics instruction, driven by its potential to foster active learning and bridge performance gaps (Oladejo et al., 2021).
Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the impact of the use of ICT on the academic performances of students in mathematics.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that there is lack of adequate infrastructure, such as insufficient computers, unreliable power supply, and limited internet access in many schools. These deficiencies create an unequal playing field where only students in well-resourced schools benefit from ICT tools, leaving others at a disadvantage (Okebukola, 2007).
Additionally, the use of ICT is sometimes hindered by a lack of content-specific resources tailored to the mathematics curriculum. Many digital tools and platforms are designed for general educational purposes, which limits their application in teaching complex mathematical concepts effectively (Beauchamp, 2016).
Furthermore, many educators lack the technical skills and pedagogical knowledge to integrate ICT effectively into their teaching practices. This is particularly concerning in regions where professional development opportunities are scarce, making it difficult for teachers to adapt to technology-driven methods (Olaoye & Alabi, 2019). Also, the financial burden of acquiring and maintaining ICT tools is another significant issue. Schools with limited budgets struggle to purchase the necessary devices, software, and infrastructure to support ICT integration (Yusuf, 2005). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by evaluating the impact of the use of ICT on the academic performances of students in mathematics.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to examine the impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on the academic performance of students in mathematics. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
- To analyze the extent to which Information Communication Technology tools are used in teaching mathematics in schools.
- To evaluate the relationship between the use of ICT and students' academic performance in mathematics.
- To identify the challenges faced by teachers and students in integrating ICT into mathematics instruction.
- To assess the availability and accessibility of ICT infrastructure for teaching mathematics in schools.
- To recommend strategies for effective ICT integration to improve mathematics education and students' performance.
1.4 Research Questions
The study came up with research questions so as to be able to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions for the study are stated below as follows:
- How can innovative ICT tools and resources be created to enhance the teaching of mathematics?
- What effective teaching methodologies can be designed to incorporate ICT for improved student engagement and understanding in mathematics?
- How can the sustainability of ICT infrastructure for mathematics education be maintained and evaluated?
- What is the impact of ICT usage on students' academic performance in mathematics?
- What challenges are faced in integrating ICT into mathematics education, and what solutions can be proposed to address them?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In order to pursue the objective of this study, the following generalized statements have been designed to guide and aids in obtaining the result for the experiment to be conducted. For this work, the null hypothesis will be represented with H0 while the alternative hypothesis will be represented with hypothesis H1.
- H0: The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching mathematics has no significant effect on the academic performance of students.
- H1: The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching mathematics significantly improves the academic performance of students.
1.6 Significance of Study
The findings of this research will offer recommendations for improving the integration of ICT in educational systems, thereby fostering a more conducive learning environment. It will also contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve educational quality and student outcomes in mathematics.
Additionally, the findings will assist in informing decisions regarding the allocation of resources and professional development programs for teachers in integrating ICT into their instructional practices.
1.7 Scope of Study
The scope of the research is focused on evaluating the impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on the academic performance of students in mathematics within secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The limitation of this study was the availability of sufficient ICT resources in some schools. Not all schools had access to the necessary technological infrastructure, such as computers, reliable internet, and up-to-date educational software, which limited the scope of ICT usage among students.
Additionally, there was a challenge in obtaining accurate data from some schools due to inconsistent record-keeping and varying levels of cooperation from school administrators. Financial constraints also played a role, as limited funding affected the researcher's ability to reach a broader sample of schools.
Furthermore, the study was confined to secondary schools in Lagos State, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other regions with different educational contexts and infrastructure.
Lastly, time constraints hindered a more in-depth exploration of long-term impacts of ICT use on students' academic performance.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Information Communication Technology (ICT): ICT refers to the integration of digital tools, platforms, and communication technologies used for gathering, processing, storing, and transmitting information. In the context of education, ICT includes the use of computers, the internet, educational software, and digital devices to enhance learning and teaching processes (Cummings, 2013).
Academic Performance: It refers to the extent to which a student successfully achieves the learning objectives of their courses, which is typically measured through grades, test scores, and other forms of evaluation. It reflects a student's understanding, skills, and competencies in academic subjects, particularly in Mathematics in this study (Oluwole, 2016).
Mathematics: In this study refers to the branch of study focused on the concepts, theories, and problem-solving techniques related to numbers, shapes, and patterns. Mathematics is a core subject in the school curriculum, and its academic performance is often an indicator of overall student success (Adeyemo, 2012).
Impact: In this study refers to the effect or influence that the use of ICT has on students' performance in Mathematics. It is assessed by comparing student outcomes before and after the integration of ICT tools into their learning processes (Ogunyemi & Alabi, 2017).
Students: In this context refer to individuals enrolled in the educational system, particularly those studying Mathematics at the secondary school level, whose academic performance in the subject is being assessed in relation to ICT usage.
Technology Integration: It refers to the process of embedding ICT tools and methods into the traditional learning environment, making use of digital technologies to support and enhance both teaching and learning activities (Eze, 2018).
