1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the rapid expansion of the internet revolutionized the role of IT in education. The ability to access vast amounts of information, communicate across distances, and participate in online learning environments brought new dimensions to the teaching and learning process. Technologies such as multimedia presentations, interactive whiteboards, and educational websites became commonplace, enhancing instructional delivery and student engagement (Pelgrum & Law, 2003). The 21st century has witnessed the integration of more advanced and interactive technologies such as smartboards, mobile learning applications, learning management systems (LMS), and artificial intelligence-driven educational tools. The global spread of smartphones and tablets has made mobile learning possible, allowing students to access learning materials anytime and anywhere (World Bank, 2021).
In many developing countries, including Nigeria, the use of IT in education has been gradually increasing, although infrastructural and financial limitations persist. National education policies have recognized the importance of IT in modern education, leading to initiatives aimed at equipping schools with digital tools and training teachers in their use (Federal Ministry of Education, 2019). Today, IT is regarded not just as a support tool but as an essential component of an effective educational system, capable of transforming teaching methodologies and improving learning outcomes across all levels.
In today's rapidly evolving digital age, the integration of Information Technology (IT) into the education sector has significantly transformed traditional teaching and learning practices. IT, broadly defined as the use of computers, software, internet, and digital tools for managing and processing information, has become a cornerstone in modern educational systems (Laudon & Laudon, 2020).
The use of IT in teaching and learning promotes interactive and participatory methods of instruction. It enables teachers to access diverse teaching aids, digital resources, and global information, thereby enhancing the quality and effectiveness of lesson delivery (UNESCO, 2022). For students, IT opens a wide array of learning opportunities, including self-paced learning, access to virtual libraries, simulations, and real-time collaboration. These tools foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills which are essential in the 21st-century learning environment (Anderson, 2010).
Oye, Obi & Mohd (2012) stated that schools that incorporate IT into their teaching methods tend to experience improved academic performance, better classroom management, and more efficient administrative tasks (Oye, Obi & Mohd, 2012). However, the impact of IT is not uniform across educational institutions, especially in developing countries where access to technology may be limited due to financial, infrastructural, or skill-related challenges.
Information Technology (IT) according to Laudon et al., (2020)refers to the use of computers, software, networks, and other digital tools to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data for various purposes (Laudon & Laudon, 2020). In the context of education, IT encompasses all the digital resources and technological tools used to enhance teaching and learning processes, such as interactive whiteboards, projectors, educational software, virtual learning platforms, and the internet. The integration of IT in education has revolutionized traditional teaching methods by promoting active learning, individualized instruction, and instant access to global information.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the lack of adequate infrastructure in schools, especially in rural or underfunded areas. Many institutions do not have access to modern computers, or even a stable power supply, which makes it difficult for both teachers and students to benefit from digital learning tools (Aduwa-Ogiegbaen et al., 2005).
In cases where equipment is available, there is often a shortage of trained personnel who can use these tools effectively for instructional purposes. Teachers may lack the necessary skills or confidence to adopt IT in their teaching methods, leading to underutilization of available resources (Tinio, 2003).
Furthermore, the integration of IT into the curriculum is often not aligned with the pedagogical needs of teachers or the learning styles of students. Without proper planning and support, technology becomes an additional burden rather than a solution, leading to frustration and resistance from both educators and learners (Bingimlas, 2009). The problem is further compounded by policy gaps and lack of sustained government support in terms of funding, training, and monitoring.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of Information Technology on teaching and learning in schools. The primary objectives of this study are:
- To identify the types of Information Technology tools commonly used by teachers and students in the classroom.
- To assess the extent to which Information Technology is utilized in teaching and learning in schools.
- To evaluate the effects of IT usage on students' academic performance and engagement.
- To examine the challenges faced by schools in implementing IT for teaching and learning.
- To suggest practical strategies for improving the integration of Information Technology in the education sector.
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the stated objectives, the following research questions are formulated to guide the investigation into the effects of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) among adolescents:
- To what extent is Information Technology utilized in teaching and learning in schools?
- What types of Information Technology tools are commonly used by teachers and students in the classroom?
- How does the use of Information Technology affect students' academic performance and engagement?
- What challenges do schools face in implementing Information Technology for teaching and learning?
- What strategies can be adopted to improve the integration of Information Technology in the education sector?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Based on the stated objectives, the following hypotheses are formulated:
- H0: The use of Information Technology in schools does not have a significant impact on teaching effectiveness, student engagement, or academic performance.
- H1: The use of Information Technology in schools has a significant positive impact on teaching effectiveness, student engagement, and academic performance.
1.6 Significance of Study
The outcome of this research will encourage students to take an active role in their education, enhance their digital literacy, and improve their overall academic performance through the use of various digital learning tools. Also, school administrators will find the study valuable as it will inform them of the benefits and challenges associated with adopting IT in the classroom.
Additionally, the findings will guide the development of policies aimed at improving technology access, teacher professional development, and funding for educational technology initiatives.
Furthermore, the results will help administrators make informed decisions regarding the allocation of resources, teacher training, and infrastructure development to optimize the use of technology in schools.
1.7 Scope of Study
This study will focus on the impact of Information Technology in teaching and learning within schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research will be limited to secondary schools within Lagos State, ensuring a focused analysis of the state's educational landscape. It will not cover tertiary institutions, primary schools, or schools outside Lagos, as the scope is concentrated on secondary education within a defined geographic area.
Data will be gathered through surveys and interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators, providing both qualitative and quantitative insights into the integration of Information Technology in the educational process. The study will focus on the period between 2023 and 2024 to capture recent trends and challenges.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:
- Time Constraint: The time frame for completing the study was limited, which restricted the ability to conduct a more thorough investigation into the long-term effects of Information Technology in education. The study was also confined to the academic years 2023 and 2024, which limited the scope of the research in terms of observing trends over an extended period.
- Financial Constraint: The study was constrained by limited financial resources, which impacted the extent of fieldwork and the tools used for data collection. Due to financial limitations, the study was unable to include a larger sample size or additional school districts, which may have broadened the findings.
- Delay from Respondents: Some respondents, including teachers and school administrators, experienced delays in providing feedback, which affected the timeline of the study.
1.9 Definition of Terms
Information Technology (IT):
Information Technology refers to the use of computers, software, networks, and other digital tools to create, store, manage, and exchange information. In the context of education, it encompasses the use of electronic resources, such as computers, the internet, interactive whiteboards, and educational software, to enhance the teaching and learning process (Bada & Olumide, 2020).
Teaching Effectiveness:
Teaching effectiveness refers to the ability of a teacher to facilitate learning in a way that meets students' educational needs. It includes the use of various teaching methods, the ability to engage students, and the creation of a positive learning environment. The integration of IT in teaching often aims to improve teaching effectiveness by providing diverse instructional tools that cater to different learning styles (Oladejo, 2018).
Learning Engagement:
Learning engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, and motivation that students exhibit while learning. IT tools such as interactive applications, multimedia resources, and online learning platforms have been found to enhance student engagement by making lessons more interactive, visually stimulating, and tailored to individual learning paces (Sadaf, Newby, & Ertmer, 2016).
Academic Performance:
Academic performance is the measurable outcome of a student's learning, typically assessed through grades, test scores, and overall achievements in school. Research has shown that the use of IT in classrooms can have a positive impact on students' academic performance by improving access to learning materials, facilitating better understanding of complex subjects, and providing opportunities for individualized learning (Olatoye, 2019).
Digital Literacy:
Digital literacy refers to the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate, and create information using a range of digital technologies. It is an essential skill for both students and teachers in a modern educational environment. Digital literacy is crucial for utilizing IT tools effectively and ensuring that learners can participate in a technology-driven society (Ng, 2012).
Educational Software:
Educational software is software designed to aid in teaching and learning by providing interactive and engaging ways to present content. These programs include simulations, tutorials, games, and applications that allow students to practice and apply knowledge in a more dynamic and interactive way (Ally, 2008).
E-Learning:
E-learning refers to the use of electronic media, such as the internet, computers, and digital platforms, to deliver educational content and facilitate learning. It allows for remote learning, where students can access resources and participate in lessons outside of the traditional classroom setting. E-learning platforms are increasingly being used to complement face-to-face teaching and offer flexible learning options (Zawacki-Richter et al., 2019).
