    ABSTRACT

The study investigates the impact of auto and mechanical technology education on road safety awareness in Nigeria. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. Data were collected through a structured survey administered to students and professionals in the field of auto and mechanical technology. The results indicate a positive correlation between exposure to technical education in auto mechanics and heightened awareness of road safety principles.

The findings show that individuals who have undergone formal mechanical education possess a better understanding of vehicle maintenance, road safety regulations, and accident prevention measures compared to those without such training. Furthermore, the study accents that auto and mechanical technology education significantly influences safer driving behavior and decision-making on the road.

The analysis reveals that road safety programs integrated into the curriculum of technical institutions have a lasting effect on the attitudes of both students and professionals towards road safety. However, the study also points out that while education plays a crucial role, there remains a need for more comprehensive integration of road safety concepts into the curriculum. Based on the findings of this research, it was recommended that Government and educational institutions should invest in improving the infrastructure and facilities for practical training, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in real-world scenarios. Furthermore, there should be collaboration between educational institutions, the government, and the private sector to develop programs that promote continuous education and awareness on road safety, targeting both current and future drivers.

    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

The growing rate of road traffic accidents in Nigeria has raised significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of road safety measures and the importance of education in improving road safety awareness. Nigeria, like many other developing nations, faces numerous challenges related to traffic safety, with road traffic accidents accounting for a high number of deaths and injuries annually. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), road traffic injuries remain one of the leading causes of mortality globally, with low- and middle-income countries bearing the brunt.

In Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps reported that poor vehicle maintenance, coupled with inadequate driver education, contributes significantly to the increasing accident rates on the roads (FRSC, 2022). Auto and mechanical technology education plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. This type of education equips individuals with the technical skills required for the proper maintenance and repair of vehicles, thereby ensuring that they are roadworthy. Well-maintained vehicles are less likely to break down or cause accidents due to mechanical failures, such as brake failures or tire bursts. Auto and mechanical technology education also fosters a culture of preventive maintenance, which is crucial for ensuring vehicle safety and reducing the likelihood of accidents caused by technical malfunctions (Olorunfemi & Adegbite, 2020).

According to Olorunfemi & Adegbite (2020), auto and mechanical technology education refers to the systematic study and training in automotive engineering, vehicle maintenance, and mechanical systems, aimed at equipping individuals with technical skills and knowledge to diagnose, repair, and maintain automobiles (Olorunfemi & Adegbite, 2020). Road safety is a critical public health issue that involves the prevention of traffic accidents and the minimization of injuries and fatalities on the road. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), road traffic accidents remain a leading cause of death and disability, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. The role of auto and mechanical technology education in enhancing road safety awareness is significant, as it provides individuals with the knowledge and technical expertise necessary to maintain roadworthy vehicles, detect potential hazards, and adhere to traffic regulations.

Auto and mechanical technology education in Nigeria has been integrated into various technical and vocational institutions. However, despite these efforts, the country still faces numerous road safety challenges, partly due to a lack of widespread awareness of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and the impact of mechanical failures on road safety. This highlights the need for more targeted education and training programs to enhance road safety awareness among road users, including drivers, mechanics, and vehicle owners. Research on the impact of auto and mechanical technology education on road safety awareness can provide valuable insights into how this field of education can contribute to reducing road accidents and improving safety on Nigerian roads. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of auto and mechanical technology education on road safety awareness in Nigeria

    1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that there is a noticeable disconnect between the theoretical knowledge imparted through education and its practical relevance in everyday road safety practices. Many vehicle owners and drivers often neglect routine maintenance and proper vehicle inspections, contributing to the high rate of road accidents in the country (Adewale & Ajibola, 2019).

Furthermore, many Nigerians in these regions still rely on informal and unregulated auto repair services, which do not prioritize road safety, thus increasing the risks of vehicle-related accidents (Oluwaseun, 2018). Additionally, despite the establishment of institutions like the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which works toward reducing road accidents, there is still a need for more efficient collaboration between these bodies and auto and mechanical education institutions to drive home the importance of road safety on a larger scale. This study, therefore, aims to address these gaps by investigating how auto and mechanical technology education influences road safety awareness among individuals in Nigeria.
