ABSTRACT

Governance restriction in the 21st Century strategies has been generally poor at integrating media and communication issues into their analysis, research and strategic plans. The study was carried out to investigate the Mass Media and Government Restriction in the 21st Century using Twitter Ban as a case study. In achieving this aim, the specific objectives were laid out to examine the positive impact of Government Restriction on Twitter Ban in the 21st Century, examine the impact of twitter ban on Nigeria citizens using twitter as a source of revenue for small and medium scale enterprise or business and determine whether twitter social media have enhanced the productivity of small and medium scale enterprise owners in Nigeria. The influence of mass media in today’s world of communication, especially journalism cannot be over-looked. Since its arrival social media have certainly changed the way journalists work, how stories are developed and disseminated. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. This study will be of immeasurable importance to SME owners, media organizations, news agencies, editors, lecturers and students in the field of journalism and mass communication and it will help SME owners to have rarely embraced mass media to do so in order to increase their productivity.

1.1 Introduction

Governance restriction in the 21st Century strategies has been generally poor at integrating media and communication issues into their analysis, research and strategic plans. It argues that the impact of changing media and communication landscapes on governance outcomes is increasing, that the way in which the media is conceptualized in relationship to governance needs a rethink and that governance policy needs to find better ways of prioritizing it.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
