ABSTRACT


Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a satellite RNA virus that depends on HBV for propagation. It uses the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as a viral envelope and shares the same hepatocyte receptor for viral entry. The study scrutinizes the Prevalence of Hepatitis D Virus in Federal Medical Centre. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to obtain a general view of the group of individual affected with Hepatitis D whether children or adults and understand the complex or exorbitant nature of the structure of the hepatitis D virus as well as the debilitating effect it has on the patient. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 80 (eighty) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. Hepatitis D virus is a viral disease that is spread through all body fluids, that is to say that one can contact this disease by exchange to body fluid with infected person. The significance of this study is seen in the light of having a better knowledge and understanding or better still widening our scope of the chronically and pathogenically of HBV.



1.1 Introduction

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a satellite RNA virus that depends on HBV for propagation (Hughes et al., 2011). It uses the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as a viral envelope and shares the same hepatocyte receptor for viral entry (Botelho-Souza et al., 2017). HDV is among the smallest of viruses capable of causing human disease, yet HBV co-infection with HDV is the most severe form of viral hepatitis (Hughes et al., 2011). HDV transmission follows two patterns. Infection occurring simultaneously with HBV can cause extensive hepatic necrosis and manifest as a severe or even fulminant hepatitis with a high case fatality rate (Botelho-Souza et al., 2017). With recovery, simultaneous infection in adults usually results in clearance of both viruses (Hughes et al., 2011).
