1.1 Introduction
Naturalism is a literary genre that started as a movement in late 19th century and early 20th centuries in European drama, theater, literature, film and art. Naturalism is sometimes claimed to give an even more accurate depiction of life than realism. It refers to theatre that attempts to create an illusion of reality through a range of dramatic and theatrical strategies. Each person inherits compulsive instincts-especially hunger, the drive to accumulate possessions, and sexuality-and is then subjected to the social and economic forces in the family, the class, and the milieu into which that person is born. My Father Lied is ficticious yet it is the reality that produces the wide discrepancies in nations’ ideas of national integration. Onuoha probes sensitively the psychological constructs and plight of the masses engendered by harsh political, economic, cultural and religious realities in the country.
