    1.0 Introduction

    1.1 Background of Study

Over the years, SWOT analysis tool gained widespread acceptance for its simplicity, flexibility, and effectiveness in providing actionable insights. Today, it is employed by businesses of all sizes, non-profits, and even governments to make informed decisions and adapt to ever-changing environments. In the context of business plans, SWOT analysis became integral as it allows organizations to align their strategies with their internal capabilities and external opportunities while addressing potential risks.

According to Hitt et al., (2017), in the dynamic and complex business environment of today, especially in emerging markets such as Nigeria, companies are often faced with multiple challenges, including economic instability, changing consumer behavior, and intense competition. These challenges underscore the need for businesses to make informed and timely decisions that ensure long-term success and competitive advantage. SWOT analysis offers valuable insights into how a company can optimize its operations by capitalizing on its strengths, addressing weaknesses, and preparing for potential market risks (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2017).

SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used by businesses to assess their internal and external environments. The acronym stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, which are key factors evaluated during the analysis. It helps organizations identify what they do well (Strengths), where they need improvement (Weaknesses), the external opportunities they can capitalize on, and the potential threats they must mitigate (Humphrey, 2005). SWOT analysis serves as a guide to developing strategies that align an organization's strengths with opportunities while addressing weaknesses and preparing for potential risks. In today's competitive business environment, organizations are constantly seeking ways to improve their strategic planning processes and make informed decisions. One of the most widely used tools for this purpose is SWOT analysis, which evaluates the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats that a business faces.

The role of SWOT analysis in business planning is crucial for organizations seeking to develop strategic plans that can drive growth, competitiveness, and sustainability. SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, is a comprehensive framework that allows businesses to assess both their internal capabilities and external market conditions (Kotler & Keller, 2016). SWOT analysis has gained widespread adoption across various industries due to its simplicity and effectiveness in strategic planning (Hill & Westbrook, 2019). It provides an insightful overview of a company's position, offering clarity on the factors that drive its success or may hinder its performance. While many businesses rely on SWOT analysis to create foundational business plans, its application goes beyond that by informing decisions on product development, market entry, competitive positioning, and resource allocation (Jain, 2020). The use of SWOT analysis in business planning gained further momentum in the late 20th century as industries became more competitive and market conditions more volatile. In Nigeria, for instance, businesses operate in a dynamic environment characterized by fluctuating economic conditions, intense competition, and regulatory challenges. The application of SWOT analysis has proven to be a valuable tool for Nigerian businesses, enabling them to craft strategic plans that are both realistic and adaptable. In the ever-evolving business landscape, the need for effective strategic planning has become critical for organizations striving to achieve growth and sustainability. Strategic planning involves not only setting goals but also identifying the means to achieve them amidst uncertainties and challenges. One tool that has stood the test of time in aiding this process is SWOT analysis, which evaluates a company's internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats.

Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the role of SWOT analysis in business plans.

    1.2 Statement of Problems

Investigation revealed that in today's dynamic and highly competitive business environment, companies often struggle to align their internal resources and capabilities with external market conditions. Also, many business owners lacks in-depth understanding of how to accurately identify and analyze strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Many businesses rely on superficial assessments, leading to incomplete or biased evaluations that undermine the credibility of their business plans.

In the Nigerian context, businesses like Human Hair Nigeria Limited face additional challenges, including economic instability, regulatory pressures, and intense competition from both local and international markets. Without a robust application of SWOT analysis, these businesses are at risk of overlooking critical opportunities and underestimating potential threats, which could lead to suboptimal strategic decisions.

Additionally, businesses frequently isolate SWOT analysis as a standalone activity rather than embedding it into the broader context of their strategic planning. This results in business plans that are either too generic or disconnected from the realities of the company's operational and competitive landscape.

The problem is further exacerbated by inadequate training and limited access to resources necessary for conducting comprehensive SWOT analyses. Many small and medium-sized enterprises lack the expertise to critically evaluate their internal operations and external environments, leaving them vulnerable to misjudgments and missed opportunities.

    1.8 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, there were some problems encountered which stood as limitations to the research work. Some of the limitations include:

    1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
    2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
    3. Initial Cooperation Delay from Respondents: A particular limitation of this work came as a result of the respondent refusal to offer their cooperation at the initial time they were contacted. This contributed in making the success of this research study difficult.

    1.9 Definition of Terms

    SWOT Analysis:

SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used by businesses to assess their internal and external environments. The acronym stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, which are key factors evaluated during the analysis. It helps organizations identify what they do well (Strengths), where they need improvement (Weaknesses), the external opportunities they can capitalize on, and the potential threats they must mitigate (Humphrey, 2005). SWOT analysis serves as a guide to developing strategies that align an organization's strengths with opportunities while addressing weaknesses and preparing for potential risks.

    Business Plan:

A business plan is a formal document that outlines a company's goals, strategies, and the plan for achieving them. It typically includes sections on the company's mission, market analysis, organizational structure, product offerings, financial projections, and growth strategies (Abrams, 2020). A well-structured business plan provides a roadmap for the company's future and is crucial for attracting investors, securing financing, and guiding business decisions.

    Strategic Planning:

Strategic planning refers to the process of defining a company's direction and making decisions on allocating resources to pursue that direction. It involves setting long-term goals and determining the actions and resources needed to achieve them. Strategic planning is essential for ensuring a business remains focused and adaptable in the face of changing market conditions and competitive landscapes (David, 2019).

    Strengths:

These may include factors such as a strong brand, skilled workforce, proprietary technology, or financial stability. Identifying strengths is important because it allows a company to build on what it does best (Gurel & Tat, 2017).

    Weaknesses:

Weaknesses are the internal factors that hinder an organization's ability to achieve its goals. These might include inadequate resources, lack of expertise, or poor customer service. Recognizing potential threats allows a business to develop strategies to mitigate risks and avoid detrimental effects on its performance (Humphrey, 2005).
