ABSTRACT

This study aimed at examining the school environmental factors and students' academic performance in physics in public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. Literatures relevant to the study were reviewed under theoretical, conceptual and empirical framework. The research design employed for this study was descriptive survey design; a study population of 3169 SS2 Physics students and sample size of 90 students was employed.

The instrument used for the data collection was School Environmental Factors Questionnaire (SEFQ). The instrument was validated by experts and as well tested for reliability, where a reliability co-efficient of 0.87 was obtained. Ninety (90) copies of the School Environmental Factors Questionnaire (SEFQ) were administered to the students sampled for the study. Data were collected, processed and analyzed statistically and tested for its hypothesis at 0.05 significance using Chi-square test analysis.

The results obtained from the data analysis showed that there is significant influence between physical facilities and students' academic performance in physics. There is significant influence between class size and students' academic performance in Physics. There is significant influence between school location and students' academic performance in Physics. Some useful recommendations were made of which one is that efforts should be made by education stakeholders to provide schools with functional facilities to help promote effective teaching and learning for students' academic performance.
