ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to Study the Socio-Economic Realities in Nigerian Literature using Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to examine the trauma of domestic violence among females in Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and evaluate the traumatic experiences of Nigerian women in its various facets as represented in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus is a feminist work that challenges the dehumanizing tendencies of the menfolk as evident in the character of Mama (Beatrice Achike) who eventually exposed the African conception of an ideal woman who keeps dumb even in the face of humiliation, victimization, and brutality so as to be perceived as a good woman. Investigation revealed the problem faced by women in the past in some parts of Nigeria is female circumcision or in other words genital mutilation; a long known barbaric act of ritual. This study will contribute to a re-evaluation and re-examination of the traditional Psychological in Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus, which seeks to locate “phallic symbols” or the libidinal symptoms of the authors of literary texts. Therefore, text world theory is employed as a tool to depict the psychological states, emotions, and beliefs of characters. Thus, the sexist practices against the characters are discussed to show how they influence them. In addition, the different types of worlds are differently interpreted due to their significance. This study will be of immense benefit to researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.
