ABSTRACT


The proposed blockchain based student result management system that allows students' data to be permanently recorded and cryptographically secured, ensuring that once results are entered, they cannot be altered or tampered with. The motivation for this study stems from the persistent challenges faced by conventional result management systems, including delayed result processing, human errors, data manipulation, and difficulties in verification. The aim of this study is to develop a blockchain-based system that addresses these challenges by providing a secure, transparent, and efficient platform for managing student results.

The methodology employed in this study involved designing a system architecture that integrates blockchain technology with smart contracts to automate result submission, computation, storage, and verification. The system was implemented using a combination of blockchain frameworks and a user-friendly interface for students, lecturers, and administrators. Data was collected to evaluate the performance, security, and efficiency of the system compared to traditional models.

The new system will ensure instant and secure access to their results and academic records, enhancing personal data ownership and transparency. Furthermore, the system will simplify result submission and verification, reducing manual workload and administrative errors. The expected results from the proposed system include accurate, secure, and easily verifiable student records, reduced administrative delays, and improved transparency in result management. Also, the new system will provide students with immediate access to their results, while institutions and external organizations will be able to verify academic credentials efficiently.




1.1 Introduction

A student result management system is an information management platform designed to handle the processes of recording, computing, storing, and retrieving students' academic performance in an efficient and secure manner. According to Nwosu and Eze (2020), a result management system serves as a digital framework that automates the traditional manual system of result processing in educational institutions, thereby reducing human error, enhancing accuracy, and ensuring easy accessibility of student records. In recent years, the growing need for data transparency, reliability, and integrity in academic environments has highlighted the importance of adopting advanced technologies such as blockchain to improve result management systems.

Blockchain technology, as defined by Swan (2015), is a decentralized, distributed ledger that records transactions across multiple computers in such a way that the registered data cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration of all subsequent blocks. In the context of education, blockchain provides a secure and verifiable means of storing students' academic records, preventing unauthorized access, data tampering, and result falsification.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Limitation of the study and Definition of technical terms.


1.2 Background of Study

Education is the foundation for societal growth and development, and effective management of academic information plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency within educational institutions. According to Adebayo (2020), the management of students' academic records, particularly results, forms an integral part of institutional administration and performance evaluation. However, many schools and universities still rely on traditional and semi-digital systems that are prone to human error, data tampering, and inefficiency. The manual method of result computation and record keeping often results in delayed processing, loss of data, and unauthorized alterations, which compromise the credibility of the educational process (Adebayo, 2020).

Nwogu and Opara (2019) asserted that one of the major problems facing educational institutions today is the difficulty in maintaining a reliable, secure, and tamper-proof student result management system. They emphasized that such systems are frequently centralized and vulnerable to manipulation by unauthorized individuals. Similarly, Okeke (2021) reported that centralized databases used in result management are susceptible to cyberattacks and data breaches, raising significant concerns about information security and integrity. In the face of these challenges, blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution capable of transforming result management systems through its decentralized, transparent, and immutable nature (Okeke, 2021).

Blockchain technology was originally developed as the backbone of cryptocurrency transactions but has since expanded into various sectors, including education. Tapscott and Tapscott (2018) contended that blockchain serves as a distributed ledger that records transactions in a manner that is permanent, verifiable, and secure. According to Swan (2015), blockchain operates by linking blocks of data using cryptographic techniques, ensuring that once information is stored, it cannot be altered or deleted without detection.

Furthermore, Afolabi and Olatunji (2019) stated that many institutions experience delays and inaccuracies in the processing and release of students' results due to inefficient manual systems and lack of automation. They also affirmed that blockchain-based systems could address these challenges by automating verification processes, enhancing transparency, and reducing administrative bottlenecks. In addition, Sharma and Dutta (2021) reported that integrating blockchain technology into academic management provides stakeholders with real-time access to verifiable academic records, thereby eliminating the need for third-party verification and promoting trust between students, institutions, and employers.

Blockchain technology's potential extends beyond data protection; it also introduces a paradigm shift in how academic records are shared and verified. According to Ojo and Bello (2022), blockchain fosters decentralized data management, allowing students to take ownership of their academic records while institutions act as validators rather than sole custodians. The relevance of blockchain in result management also lies in its ability to ensure transparency and prevent forgery. Okon and Effiong (2020) asserted that issues of certificate fraud and result manipulation have become rampant, particularly in developing countries, due to the lack of an effective verification mechanism. A blockchain-based result management system ensures that each academic record is time-stamped, securely encrypted, and permanently stored, making any attempt to alter or falsify records practically impossible.

The challenges encountered that led to the execution of the research work is that, many institutions still rely on outdated systems that fail to meet modern standards of data security, accuracy, and efficiency. It is against the background that the developments of this software will contribute significantly to addressing long-standing challenges such as data manipulation, result falsification, unauthorized access, and inefficiency in the traditional result management process.


1.3 Statement of Problem

Based on the investigation conducted, the existing student result management systems encounter several challenges, with some of the most significant issues outlined below:

  1. The old system's result computations are sometimes inaccurate due to manual processing and human errors.
  2. There is a high risk of unauthorized access and potential tampering with academic records.
  3. Many students experience delays in the processing and publication of their results.
  4. There is a lack of transparency in the result verification process.
  5. The traditional system faces difficulties in verifying student credentials by employers and other educational institutions.
  6. There is an excessive dependency on centralized databases, making the systems vulnerable to cyberattacks, data loss, and single points of failure.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to develop a blockchain-based student result management system that will improve the integrity and accessibility of academic records in educational institutions. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:

  1. To create a secure and transparent student result management system that leverages blockchain technology to ensure data integrity and immutability.
  2. To develop a decentralized framework that enables efficient storage, retrieval, and verification of student academic records without the risk of unauthorized modifications.
  3. To design a user-friendly interface for administrators, lecturers, and students that facilitates seamless result computation, submission, and access through blockchain integration.
  4. To implement a smart contract mechanism that automates result validation and enhances accountability in the result management process.
  5. To evaluate the performance, security, and reliability of the proposed blockchain-based system in comparison with traditional centralized result management systems.

1.5 Significance of Study

The deployment of the proposed blockchain technology for student result management system will hold significant relevance in the following ways:

  1. Students: The system will ensure instant and secure access to their results and academic records, enhancing personal data ownership and transparency.
  2. Lecturers: The system will simplify result submission and verification, reducing manual workload and administrative errors.
  3. Educational Administrators: The system will improve operational efficiency, data accuracy, and accountability within the institution.
  4. Employers and Verification Agencies: The system will provide a reliable and verifiable source of academic credentials, preventing fraud and forgery.
  5. Policy Makers and Educational Authorities: The system will provide insights and a framework for modernizing academic record management using emerging technologies.

1.6 Scope of Study

The scope of the research is focused on designing and implementing a blockchain-based student result management system specifically for tertiary institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria. The system will cover processes including the computation, storage, retrieval, and verification of student academic results within selected universities in the state.


1.7 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:

  1. Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
  2. Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this research work. There were lots of information needed from the staffs of this institution to enhance the study which took them time to release or they did not release at all for security purposes, hence the scope was reduced.
  3. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

1.8 Definition of Terms

Blockchain Technology: A decentralized, distributed ledger system that securely records transactions or data in immutable blocks, ensuring transparency and security (Swan, 2015). In this study, it refers to the technology used to securely store and verify student results.

Student Result Management System (SRMS): An information system designed to record, process, store, and retrieve students' academic performance efficiently (Nwosu & Eze, 2020).

Decentralization: The distribution of data storage and processing across multiple nodes rather than a single centralized server, reducing vulnerability to tampering (Tapscott & Tapscott, 2018).

Immutability: The characteristic of data being unalterable once recorded, ensuring that academic results cannot be tampered with.

Verification: The process of confirming the authenticity of academic records by authorized stakeholders such as educational institutions and employers.

Data Integrity: The accuracy, consistency, and reliability of data throughout its lifecycle, crucial for maintaining trust in academic records (Okon & Effiong, 2020).
