ABSTRACT

Bilingualism is the ability to communicate fluently in a language other than your native language. The study was carried out to investigate the Effect of Bilingualism on Language Development of Children. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to examine the factors that influence the variability in second language acquisition among children and determine the influence of dual language proficiency among Children. Investigation revealed that the problem of communication had been a common feature in all multilingual nations. People across the globe need to communicate with one another in order for society and business to keep going. The problem that arises as the result of existence of these multi-languages is what necessitates this research work. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. The significance of the study is very crucial because it helps identifies the language and cultural diversity in Nigeria, and also sensitizes our mind on the need to harmoniously co-habit with other ethnic groups, knowing fully well that Nigeria is a multi-lingual and multicultural nation. Based on the findings, it was recommended that everyone should see a fellow as a relative and not a stranger, because of language differences. This knowledge will help to curtail these excesses of tribal wars in the nation Nigeria.

1.1 Introduction

Bilingualism is the ability to communicate fluently in a language other than your native language. As our world becomes more global, we also become increasingly bilingual. Bilingual education, one of the most important components of bilingualism is a vexed question in the research area of linguistics and psychology. Genesee (2004) defines bilingual education as an education that aims to promote bilingual (or multilingual) competence by using both (or all) languages as media of instruction for significant portions of the academic curriculum. These definitions raise a question as to the solidity of the learner's language advancement and academic achievements. For Bialystok (2018), the majority of these researches has focused on children’s development of the crucial linguistic abilities.

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study.
