ABSTRACT

Government of nowadays has a lot of responsibilities including to provision of social services. The services which the government ought to provide to Udi rural women include: Water, free health facilities, employment, empowerment, justice, free education, to mention but a few. The provision of these is not adequate and this compelled the researcher to carryout the study. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used to gather data. The questionnaire was used to collect data. The Harvard style of reference was used, the validity and reliability of the instruments were tested. In distributing the questionnaire face-to-face method of distribution was used. The population size was 74,277 staff. The sample size was 204. This was got using Yamani formular. Tabular method of analysis was used. 105 respondents were used for the analysis.

The finding of this study are that the social services needs of Udi women are on health care, portable water, modern markets, etc. The extent the women benefit from the social services is small; the nature of social service available are health services, educational service, agricultural services, shelter, furthermore, the impact of the provided social services is very lowly felt, and that one of the problems affecting the provision of social services in the area if inadequate resources.

The researcher recommended that government should endeavour to provide the women with those social services they need such as functional health programmes, portable water, modern market etc, government should expand the services provided for the women such as encouraging the women to participate in decision, provide the women with adequate social services needs, and that adequate resources must be provided.

Social welfare programme for rural women is an articulated attempt by government of Nigeria and Enugu state in particular to look into various welfare packages provided for women by all levels of government and Non-government agencies (Neze, 2001).

According to Echezona, (2000: 53) the rural women in Udi LGA are not exception. (Form a greater) part of Nigeria’s rural population and as such they deserve more attention in terms of provision of welfare services.

The United Nations declared 1970-1980 the decades for women. The declaration sparked off various women development programmes or activities.
