1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
The hospitality industry is a vital sector of the global economy, encompassing businesses such as hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other service-oriented enterprises. Effective marketing strategies play a significant role in ensuring business sustainability, customer attraction, and competitive advantage within this industry (Kotler et al., 2017). The evolution of marketing in hospitality has been driven by changing consumer preferences, advancements in technology, and increasing competition, requiring businesses to adopt innovative marketing approaches to meet customer demands (Bowie & Buttle, 2016).
In Nigeria, the hospitality sector has witnessed significant growth, largely due to an increase in tourism, urbanization, and business travel. Resorts and hotels, such as Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort in Abakaliki, have increasingly embraced modern marketing techniques, including digital marketing, personalized customer experiences, and promotional campaigns, to enhance brand visibility and attract guests. According to Middleton et al. (2009), hospitality businesses that effectively implement marketing strategies tend to experience increased customer retention and revenue growth.
Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort serves as a case study to explore how marketing influences the performance of hospitality businesses. As a premium resort in Abakaliki, it competes in a dynamic environment where customer expectations are high, making strategic marketing efforts crucial for maintaining profitability and customer satisfaction. The resort employs various marketing techniques such as social media engagement, loyalty programs, and promotional discounts to enhance its market share and guest experience (Morrison, 2018).
Marketing plays a crucial role in the hospitality industry, as it helps businesses attract customers, enhance brand awareness, and improve customer satisfaction. The hospitality industry, which includes hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other service-oriented businesses, relies heavily on effective marketing strategies to maintain competitiveness and profitability (Kotler et al., 2017). Given the dynamic nature of consumer preferences and increasing competition, hospitality businesses must adopt innovative marketing techniques to remain relevant in the industry.
Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort, located in Abakaliki, serves as an ideal case study for examining the impact of marketing in the hospitality industry. As a high-end resort, the establishment implements various marketing strategies, including digital marketing, promotional offers, customer loyalty programs, and social media engagement, to attract and retain customers. Effective marketing not only drives revenue but also influences customer perceptions and brand positioning (Bowie & Buttle, 2016). Therefore, this study aims to explore how marketing strategies impact the growth and success of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort.
1.2 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that one of the challenges facing Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort is the difficulty in reaching a broader customer base despite offering quality services. Traditional marketing methods are becoming less effective, and the shift towards digital marketing requires continuous adaptation to new trends. The lack of strategic online presence and engagement is making it difficult for the resort to fully capitalize on digital platforms to attract and retain customers (Bowie & Buttle, 2016).
Additionally, customer loyalty is another issue affecting the hospitality industry, as many guests tend to explore different accommodations rather than remain committed to one brand. Without strong loyalty programs and personalized marketing approaches, Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort is experiencing difficulties in maintaining long-term customer relationships. The challenge is to create marketing strategies that not only attract new guests but also ensure repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth referrals (Middleton et al., 2009).
Furthermore, the effectiveness of marketing efforts in hospitality is often difficult to measure, making it challenging for businesses to determine the return on investment. Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort is facing difficulties in assessing the direct impact of its marketing campaigns on revenue generation, customer satisfaction, and brand reputation. Without clear metrics and analytics, the resort is struggling to refine its marketing strategies for maximum impact (Morrison, 2018). It is against the backdrop that this study seeks to address these problems by evaluating the impact of marketing in the hospitality industry.

1.8 Limitations of the study
This study was limited by several factors that may have impacted the depth and breadth of its findings.
- First, the study was focused on a single case study Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort in Abakaliki which meant that the results might not fully reflect the broader trends or challenges faced by all hospitality businesses in Nigeria. The findings, therefore, may not be generalizable to the entire hospitality industry in the country.
- Additionally, the study was constrained by time and resource limitations, which affected the ability to gather a large volume of data or conduct extensive interviews with multiple stakeholders. This limited the scope of the research to the resort's marketing efforts rather than a comprehensive analysis of the entire region's hospitality industry.
- Moreover, the study was impacted by the lack of comprehensive financial data and marketing performance metrics from the resort, which hindered the ability to quantitatively assess the direct impact of marketing strategies on the resort's financial success.
