ABSTRACT

The primary focus of this project is to expose the ills and negative effects of pornographic films and magazines on youths using Federal Polytechnic Nekede as a case study. Survey method was adopted for the analysis of data and the instrument employed was the questionnaire method. After analyzing the data, the findings revealed that pornography is indeed cancerous and is eating deep into the moral lives of youths causing a mirage of excesses on campus.

The researchers recommends that all hands should De on deck for the eradication of pornographic materials in our society or better still the government together with individual families and the society at large should set up campaigns for youths on sexual education to avoid them having secret knowledge of it to their own detriment as we all know that today's youths are tomorrow's leaders.

The Negative Effects of Pornographic Films and Magazines on the Nigerian Youths (A Case Study of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede)

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

The impact of electronic technology as a life wire for development in the 21st century cannot be overemphasized. Infact, life has become easier with the introduction of information technology to all aspects of human endeavours. Pornography is one aspect of the modern electronic mass media content that has been given little or no attention by the society. Some sections of the society have chosen to regard pornography as part of the normal trend of life while very few have come out to challenge the trend and expose its disastrous effects

This research will examine these trends with a view to identifying the effects and proffer solution. Pornography has been defined as an act of showing naked people or acts that arouse sexual excitement. Pornography comes in different ways or forms like blue films, video games, comic books like Hints, Ikebe super, Fantasy, Hearts, Better Lovers, Tickles and Hot fun etc.

Vendors of magazines even confirm that orders are made prior to the publication period to avoid scarcity. They claim that the way they are being patronized results in their continued stay in the business. It has also been confirmed from them that they cannot match the supply of pornographic materials with its demand. This can only confirm the fear that the rush for these materials is assuming the trend of life in our contemporary society.

1.3 Statement of Problems

The problem of pornography is wider in scope even more than the ordinary world. Many things happening around can be attributed to it. It was reported that some young Nigerian ladies were deported from Italy due to engagement in prostitution. If this was a result of pornography then to what extent has pornography

contributed to youth sexual progress and how can we then checkmate this hydra-headed problem?

The research will try to tackle this problem by breaking it down into the following problems

  • Does pornography contribute to youth's sexual promiscuity?
  • Is it posing a serious threat to the morals of youths in the society?
  • Is it affecting this local culture and causing an identity problem?
  • Is the government doing enough to combat this trends

This is the fulcrum around which this project revolves.

1.4 Research Objectives

This research study is aimed at achieving the following objectives;

  • To find out the reaction of parents towards watching of blue films and erotic magazines by youths
  • To find out if pornography is in existence
  • To find out the causes of the existence of pornography
  • To assess the extent of its impact on the Nigerian youths

1.5 Purpose of Study

To find out if pornographic films are rendering most of our youths into sexual acts and violence, for instance, in our higher institutions of learning, we witness thousand cases of sexual harassment, rape, premarital sex etc. in our homes, many close relations indulge in sexual immorality, siblings committing incest, our young girls who view imported blue films from Italy and other foreign countries resort to traveling abroad to practice same, resulting to abortion, unwanted pregnancies and masturbation.

Sequel to the above observations, the researcher decided to carryout a study on “The negative effect of pornographic films and magazine on Nigerian youths”.

1.6 Significance

The outcome of this work will be useful as it will expose the harmful effects of indulgence to pornography in the society. It will provide a good backing for film censoring now that the clamour for privatization of different aspects of the electronic media has been achieved.

Similarly, for the meaningful legislation on issues of pornography it is important now that the country is working very hard to redeem her image internationally.

1.7 Limitation of the Study

The general applicability of the study findings are as follows;

Time is a major factor in data collection and other relevant information for use,

Also physical energy was applied because research work is a tedious work and most a times you get worked up in the process.

The materials that will enable the researchers get the work done must be readily available else, it becomes difficult to carry an effective study. Hence, the materials needed to carryout an effective research posed another barrier, thus making the researchers to embark on a thorough research to come up with a substantial material, this was another limitation to the study.

Lastly, finance is another problem. You have to subscribe to the internet, browse the web, buy books and journals and put the data together.

Because of these limitations, the researcher had to concentrate in a particular group to narrow down this work.

1.8 Delimitation / Study

This work was delimited for reasons of feasibility to the study of attitude of youths ranging from ages 16-27. Also it deals with only films and magazines among the multifarious sources of pornographic materials.
