1.1 Introduction
Social media refers to digital platforms and applications that enable users to create, share, and interact with content and connect with others. These platforms facilitate communication and content sharing across various forms of media, including text, images, and videos (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). Facebook’s impact on social interaction and information flow is particularly notable. As a platform with over 2.8 billion monthly active users (Facebook, 2021), it serves as a central hub for personal connections, professional networking, and information sharing. The integration of features such as news feeds, messaging, and targeted advertising has transformed how users interact with each other and consume information (Smith, 2019).
In the contemporary Information and Communication Technology (ICT) era, social media platforms have emerged as pivotal elements shaping digital interaction, communication, and information dissemination. Among these platforms, Facebook stands out as a dominant force due to its widespread adoption and multifaceted functionalities. Established in 2004, Facebook has evolved from a college networking site into a global social media giant, influencing various aspects of personal and professional life (Zuckerberg, 2018).
As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitation of the study and Definition of terms.
1.2 Background of Study
The evolution of social media and its integration into the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) era is marked by significant milestones, with Facebook playing a pivotal role in this transformation. Established in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates, Facebook was initially created as a social networking site exclusively for Harvard University students (Zuckerberg, 2018). Its early success led to its expansion to other Ivy League universities and eventually to institutions nationwide, reflecting a growing demand for online social interaction.
Facebook's transition from a college networking site to a global platform began in 2006 when it opened its doors to the general public (Kirkpatrick, 2010). This expansion marked the start of Facebook's journey to becoming one of the largest social media platforms worldwide. Key developments during this period included the introduction of features such as the News Feed in 2006, which revolutionized how users interacted with content and each other (Smith, 2019). The News Feed provided a continuous stream of updates from friends and pages, transforming the way information was consumed and shared.
The introduction of the "Like" button in 2009 further enhanced user engagement by allowing individuals to express approval of posts easily (Zuckerberg, 2018). Over the years, Facebook continued to innovate by adding functionalities such as the ability to tag friends, create events, and share multimedia content. These features contributed to Facebook's growing influence on digital communication and social interaction.
In the 2010s, Facebook expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, including Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 (Kirkpatrick, 2010). These acquisitions allowed Facebook to diversify its offerings and integrate various forms of social media into a cohesive ecosystem. By incorporating these platforms, Facebook enhanced its ability to connect users across different modes of communication, further solidifying its role in the ICT era.
Despite its success, Facebook faced challenges related to privacy concerns, data breaches, and issues surrounding the spread of misinformation (Smith, 2019). These challenges highlighted the need for ongoing adjustments to policies and practices to address the evolving landscape of digital communication. The rise of social media has fundamentally transformed the landscape of ICT. Social media platforms have become integral to contemporary communication practices, reshaping how individuals connect, share information, and engage with digital content. Among these platforms, Facebook has emerged as a dominant force, influencing both personal interactions and professional activities on a global scale.
Launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his colleagues, Facebook initially served as a networking tool for university students. However, its rapid expansion and diverse functionalities have positioned it as a central player in the social media ecosystem (Zuckerberg, 2018). Today, Facebook boasts over 2.8 billion monthly active users, making it one of the largest social media networks worldwide (Facebook, 2021).
The evolution of Facebook reflects broader trends in social media development. Early social media platforms were primarily focused on facilitating basic communication and networking. In contrast, modern platforms like Facebook have integrated a wide range of features, including news feeds, messaging, video sharing, and targeted advertising (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). These features have enabled users to interact in more dynamic ways, creating new opportunities and challenges for digital communication.
The impact of Facebook on social interaction is profound. It has altered traditional communication patterns, enabling real-time exchanges and fostering a global network of connections (Smith, 2019). This shift has significant implications for personal relationships, professional networking, and information dissemination. The platform’s ability to aggregate and distribute content has also influenced media consumption and public opinion. Therefore, in Nigeria where the research was carried out, the activities that was conducted is to know the place of social media in the present ICT era.
1.3 Statement of Problems
Investigation revealed that the increasing prominence of social media platforms, particularly Facebook, in the contemporary ICT era raises several critical issues that merit investigation. One significant problem is the challenge of privacy and data security. As Facebook has grown, so has the complexity of managing user data, leading to concerns over data breaches and misuse (Smith, 2019).
Another issue is the spread of misinformation and its impact on public opinion. Facebook's wide reach and algorithm-driven content distribution have facilitated the rapid spread of false information, which can influence political views and social behavior (Zuckerberg, 2018). This problem underscores the need for effective strategies to combat misinformation and ensure the reliability of information shared on the platform.
Additionally, the impact of Facebook on mental health is a growing concern. The platform's design, which often emphasizes social validation through likes and comments, has been linked to issues such as anxiety, depression, and decreased self-esteem among users (Smith, 2019). The role of Facebook in shaping public discourse and political polarization is also a significant concern. The platform’s algorithms can create echo chambers, where users are exposed primarily to content that aligns with their existing beliefs, potentially exacerbating political and social divisions (Kirkpatrick, 2010). These problems reflect the broader challenges associated with the integration of social media into the ICT landscape and highlight the need for ongoing research and policy development to address these critical issues.
1.4 Aim and Objectives of Study
The aim of the study is to examine the place of social media in the present ICT era using Facebook as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out as follows:
