1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The focus of the research study is on the relevance of management information system (MIS) in the achievement of organizational objectives information is an indispensable resource in every organization is it profit and non-profit oriented organization.
We are a information era; through organizational had passed through different era, we had in the past the agricultural era, the manufacturing and industrial era but organization's activities get improved with timely, accurate and pertinent information that helps to makes better decision in every organization.
Management information system consists of people, equipment and procedures to gather, sort analyze, evaluate and distribute accurate, timely and pertinent information for management decision makers. The chapter is broken down into sub-headings, via-background of the study, statement of problem, purpose of study, scope of study, hypothesis formulation, research question, signification and definition of terms. Each sub-heading is discussed on after the other below.
The problem of management information system as an important tool to achieving organization objectives is challenging to managers of any organization especially the modern day managers. No organization can realize its goals and objective without a conscious effort using a well organized management information system thus, organizations are concerned with goal achievement having mobilized and allocated resources including information.
The essence of this study is to slow the relevance of management and to ascertain whether it has helps in facilitating decision making of management and also to determine the extent to which it has enable planning control and operational function of an organization, planning requires management information system. The managers have to retrieve information accurately from different realizable source to enhance quality decision making management information system is the reception of facts and ideas and it is very essential to organizations in their planning and control functions. In terms of achievement of organizations, objectives, accurate information is necessary.
1.2 Statement of Problems
The essence of every research undertaking is to solve teething and novel problems posing serious threats to the life, success and survival of any organization, we can as well say that management information system in its own respect is the life wire of organization and it has been widely used, and acknowledged. It is a very substitutive function used by management.
Many organization have realized their targets with the aid of the management information system, and still there lack of management expertise in adequately managing their information system for improvement although they mighty have one form of information system on the other. The inherent problems that bedevil the management of organization unilever are as to
- That most organization don't have efficient management information system, if they have, their information system are not effective as to its role towards goals/objective attainment.
- Most managers are governed by intuition and judgment as to what course of action to follow in their planning and decision making functions, many of them as a matter of fact don't make use of the information supplied to them from within and outside the organization and if they do to some degree, they don't make optimum use of the data they receive from the business environment.
There is also the problem of evaluating the impact of management information system towards the achievement of objective, many managers are yet to capitalize and utilize information for decision making and goods attainment therefore the question as to whether management information system enables organization achieve their objective has to be addressed in this research study.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relevance of management information system to organizations and to find out if it has helped to facilitate the decision making process of management of an organization. The researcher also intends to measures the impact of management information on business organization specifically. The purpose of this study is as following:
- To ascertain the importance of managing information system in helping organization to achieve its goals.
- To evaluate the relevance of management information system in contributing to organizational success.
- To identify the impact of management information system in ensuring organizational effectiveness and efficiency.
- To determine the importance of management information system in helping managers make valuable decision.
- To find out the extent which technological innovations adopted from management information system have geared towards enhancement of the organization
1.4 Research Questions
In order to get a clearer picture and focus for this study, we can pose serious question necessary for the solution of the problem we have identified in section.

- What is the importance of management information system in helping NITEL to achieve its goals?
- To what extent have the relevance of management information system to NITEL success?
- Does the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization being determine by management information system?
- Does NITEL manager valuable decision making depend on management information system?
- Does technological innovation adopted from management information system contribute to NITEL enhancement?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In the statement of the relationship between two or more variable the formulation of an appropriate hypothesis goes hand in hand with the selection of a research problem. The hypothesis for this study are formulated as follows:
Hypothesis One
- H0: Management information system did not contribute to NITEL success.
- H1: Management information system contributes to NITEL success.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Management information system does not contribute to effectiveness and efficiency of NITEL.
- H1: Management information system contributes to effectiveness and efficiency of NITEL.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: Valuable decision making in NITEL does not depend on management information system.
- H1: Valuable decision making in NITEL depends on management information system.
1.6 Significance of the Study
In every undertaking there must be a purpose, a scheme, a goal or target at which efforts are geared to achieve or realize the significance of the study in fact stems from the need to have an efficient information system in every organization and the entire nation of large information educates us, keeps us in touch with happenings in the world in which we are business are strengthened by accurate information in Nigeria today specifically, efforts are made by the management of organization to achieve their goals and to achieve these goals, quality and accurate information must be taken into consideration hence it will enable planning decision making and many other related managerial function.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The case study for this undertaking is restricted to Nigeria telecommunication plc (NITEL) officer the findings from the study of the relevance in NITEL Owerri will be used to generalize the effectiveness of management information wide and other organization making use information system.
As the above statement indicates the entire study focuses on NITEL as an instrument of the federal government realizing its goals of making information and communication network worthwhile in Nigeria for effective coverage of its assignment (NITEL) overall objective is to make telecommunication easy both at the local and the international level.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work.
- Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
- Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
1.9 Definition Of Terms
Management: precisely management is defined as the combination of material and human resources to achieve goals. According to manser and schwarts (1979:209) in Agu et al, (2000:98) management is defined as the process of achieving an organization goals through the coordinated performance of six specific functions planning, organizing, communicating controlling staffing and motivating.
Goals: are specific short term and quantitative statement of an organizations performance target.
Objectives: are broad and qualitative statements about the organization's performance target objective are integral to plans because they specify futures conditions that the planner deems satisfactory.
Information: information is anything capable of affecting the uncertainly associated with be given situation (Hayes 1976:801) it is anything capable of reducing on eliminating the uncertainty in any situation (kinds father et al 1977: 307).
Data: simply defined as any figure, word letter, charts or symbols that attempt to convey condition, situation or idea (Agu C.N et al 2001: 108)
Planning: planning has been define as the process clearing objective and goals of the organization determining the strategies, policies and procedures that are necessary to achieve the stated objective (Agu C.N. 200: 104)
Decision: these are areas in which actions need to be carried out such as what product features to design into a new product, how to spiced on advertising and how many territories to have.
Efficiency: the degree to which the sample represents the population.
Organization: combination of people or individual effort, working together in pursuit of certain common purpose called organizational goal.
Innovation: The processes of producing something inform of production or service that someone or company has never produces it. This is possible through technological breakthrough.
Impact: the powerful effect that has on something.
Control: the power to make decision about how a country an area an organization is run.
System: is anything one chooses to represent on entity or comprising a set of related component.
Managers: referees to those who set the tone, activities, influence the attitude that employees at lower levels have about their work.
Relevance: having ideas that are valuable and useful to people in their livers and work.
