1.0 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Modern organizations operate in highly dynamic environments that require timely, accurate, and reliable information to support decision-making and strategic planning. It is reported that Management Information Systems (MIS) play a critical role in collecting, processing, and disseminating information that ensures organizational activities align with set goals and objectives (Laudon et al., 2020). Researchers have asserted that organizations with well-implemented Management Information System experience improved operational efficiency, better resource utilization, and enhanced coordination among departments (O’Brien & Marakas, 2019).
Turban, Pollard & Wood (2018) stated that MIS provides managers with relevant insights that reduce uncertainty and guide critical decisions, making it indispensable in both daily operations and long-term planning. Furthermore, it is affirmed that MIS facilitates technological innovation and the adoption of modern processes, which contributes to competitive advantage and organizational growth (Turban, Pollard & Wood, 2018). Scholars contend that MIS not only supports managerial decision-making but also ensures effective monitoring, control, and evaluation of organizational performance, thereby improving productivity and customer service delivery. On the other hand, the full potential of MIS is often undermined by challenges such as outdated infrastructure, lack of technical expertise, resistance to change, and insufficient integration with organizational strategy.
Laudon et al., (2020) asserted that Management Information Systems (MIS) is critical for organizations to process data, make informed decisions, and align operations with strategic goals. However, in many organizations, including NITEL, challenges in the effective implementation and utilization of MIS is evident. On the one hand, MIS is expected to improve efficiency, enhance decision-making, and support organizational objectives by providing timely and accurate information (Laudon & Laudon, 2020). On the other hand, organizations often face issues such as outdated infrastructure, inadequate technical expertise, resistance to technological adoption, and poor integration of MIS into strategic planning, which hinders the system’s potential impact (O’Brien & Marakas, 2019). This study is set against the backdrop of understanding how MIS contributes to achieving organizational goals and objectives, exploring both its benefits and the challenges that affect its effective implementation within NITEL.
1.2 Statement of Problems
The essence of every research undertaking is to solve teething and novel problems posing serious threats to the life, success and survival of any organization, we can as well say that management information system in its own respect is the life wire of organization and it has been widely used, and acknowledged. It is a very substitutive function used by management.
Many organization have realized their targets with the aid of the management information system, and still there lack of management expertise in adequately managing their information system for improvement although they mighty have one form of information system on the other. The inherent problems that bedevil the management of organization unilever are as to
- That most organization don't have efficient management information system, if they have, their information system are not effective as to its role towards goals/objective attainment.
- Most managers are governed by intuition and judgment as to what course of action to follow in their planning and decision making functions, many of them as a matter of fact don't make use of the information supplied to them from within and outside the organization and if they do to some degree, they don't make optimum use of the data they receive from the business environment.
There is also the problem of evaluating the impact of management information system towards the achievement of objective, many managers are yet to capitalize and utilize information for decision making and goods attainment therefore the question as to whether management information system enables organization achieve their objective has to be addressed in this research study.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relevance of management information system to organizations and to find out if it has helped to facilitate the decision making process of management of an organization. The researcher also intends to measures the impact of management information on business organization specifically. The purpose of this study is as following:
- To ascertain the importance of managing information system in helping organization to achieve its goals.
- To evaluate the relevance of management information system in contributing to organizational success.
- To identify the impact of management information system in ensuring organizational effectiveness and efficiency.
- To determine the importance of management information system in helping managers make valuable decision.
- To find out the extent which technological innovations adopted from management information system have geared towards enhancement of the organization
1.4 Research Questions
In order to get a clearer picture and focus for this study, we can pose serious question necessary for the solution of the problem we have identified in section 1.2 above. Such questions include these below.
- What is the importance of management information system in helping NITEL to achieve its goals?
- To what extent have the relevance of management information system to NITEL success?
- Does the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization being determine by management information system?
- Does NITEL manager valuable decision making depend on management information system?
- Does technological innovation adopted from management information system contribute to NITEL enhancement?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
In the statement of the relationship between two or more variable the formulation of an appropriate hypothesis goes hand in hand with the selection of a research problem. The hypothesis for this study are formulated as follows:
Hypothesis One
- H0: Management information system did not contribute to NITEL success.
- H1: Management information system contributes to NITEL success.
Hypothesis Two
- H0: Management information system does not contribute to effectiveness and efficiency of NITEL.
- H1: Management information system contributes to effectiveness and efficiency of NITEL.
Hypothesis Three
- H0: Valuable decision making in NITEL does not depend on management information system.
- H1: Valuable decision making in NITEL depends on management information system.
1.6 Significance of the Study
In every undertaking there must be a purpose, a scheme, a goal or target at which efforts are geared to achieve or realize the significance of the study in fact stems from the need to have an efficient information system in every organization and the entire nation of large information educates us, keeps us in touch with happenings in the world in which we are business are strengthened by accurate information in Nigeria today specifically, efforts are made by the management of organization to achieve their goals and to achieve these goals, quality and accurate information must be taken into consideration hence it will enable planning decision making and many other related managerial function.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The case study for this undertaking is restricted to Nigeria telecommunication plc (NITEL) officer the findings from the study of the relevance in NITEL Owerri will be used to generalize the effectiveness of management information wide and other organization making use information system.
As the above statement indicates the entire study focuses on NITEL as an instrument of the federal government realizing its goals of making information and communication network worthwhile in Nigeria for effective coverage of its assignment overall objective is to make telecommunication easy both at the local and the international level.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
During the course of this study, many things militated against its completion, some of which are:
- Time Constraint: The time frame given to accomplish this project was very short due to school academic calendar and it was carried out under pressure which made the researcher not to implement some necessary features.
- Establishment Policies: Establishment policies posed a serious limitation as most staffs are not ready to release information needed for this project work.
- Research material: availability of research material is a major setback to the scope of the study.
- Frequent power failure: This made the researcher append more money on fuel to ensure sustainable power.
- Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
1.9 Definition Of Terms
Management: precisely management is defined as the combination of material and human resources to achieve goals. According to manser and schwarts (1979:209) in Agu et al, (2000:98) management is defined as the process of achieving an organization goals through the coordinated performance of six specific functions planning, organizing, communicating controlling staffing and motivating.
Goals: are specific short term and quantitative statement of an organizations performance target.
Objectives: are broad and qualitative statements about the organization's performance target objective are integral to plans because they specify futures conditions that the planner deems satisfactory.
