    ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to examine the Roles of Library and Information Services in Encouraging Extra-Curricular Activities of Youths using Man O’ War in University of Jos as a case study. In achieving this aim, the following specific objectives were laid out to investigate the perceived influence of library extracurricular activities on youths and identify the significance of extracurricular activities in library and information service education among youths in the area under study. The research design used in this report is descriptive design, utilizing questionnaire method to obtain information from the respondents for this project. A total of 200 (two hundred) respondents were selected for this study to represent the entire population of the study. For null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the one-way ANOVA and the t-test statistical tools at zero point zero five (0.05) level of significance. Primary data were collected from the primary source which questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection while secondary data were sources from textbooks, journals, newspapers and the internet were employed. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analyzed using simple percentage, while hypothesis was tested using chi-square test. Our findings reveal that extracurricular services influenced students’ academic achievement. Our findings revealed also that inadequate availability of extracurricular facilities and personnel are the factors militating against effective provision of extracurricular services. The result of this study may be beneficial to the government (policy makers, individuals), universities, library and library users. Based on the findings, it is recommended that adequate extracurricular facilities should be available in schools. Also, adequate extracurricular services personnel should be deployed to schools to ensure active participation of students in various activities.

    1.1 Introduction

Extracurricular activities are the sources that have been an integral part of the education system; students participate in these kinds of activities and they do not fall into the sphere of normal curriculum and instructional methods. Students at all levels participate in these activities, of all age groups and standards. The areas that come under extra-curricular activities include sports, games, art, music, drama, poetry, student newspaper, clubs and governance. Participation in all these activities or just one of them of student’s own interest has been connected to social and academic success; on the other hand, over-participation may be quite demanding and may consume much of their free time and thus interrupt with their academic curriculum as well. There are different outlooks of what is considered an extra-curricular activity (Annu, 2013).

As a prelude to other parts of this study, this chapter will discuss the background upon which this study was initiated, the statement of problems that led to this study, the Aim and Objectives of the study. Others are Significance of the study, Scope of work, Research hypothesis and questions, Limitations of the Study and Definition of technical terms.
